Look we want our local rescue services to reduce any risks to their own lives, because they all have a wife and family as well, but I had to laugh at the story of our local firemen who had to recover a 12” safe from a pond.
You watch those volunteer lifeboat crews set off in mountainous seas in small crafts that look like they will get swallowed up by the gigantic waves, all they care about is trying so save the lives of people in trouble at sea.Our firemen are very brave as well, going into houses and putting themselves at great risk to save lives.
So some burglars snatched a safe from industrial premises in Paignton and then torched their getaway car on the outskirts of the resort. It is thought they escaped with just £70 cash from the opened safe which was recovered from a frozen pond in Hollicombe Park by firefighters who hacked their way through four inches of ice, wearing dry suits, to retrieve it.
It took two firemen about five minutes using an axe to chop though the thick ice to grab the damaged, door-less safe. The pair not only climbed into full dry suits but used buoyancy aids as well as being roped to a colleague on the side of the pond.
They smashed the ice and stepped into knee-deep water to lift out the safe before groping in thick red mud beneath the water to recover two cash boxes, which had also been forced.
The watch commander, who was in charge of the recovery team, said: "We have never done an ice search before. It is not something we can really practice.
"We put in place stringent safety measures and it is only because we have local knowledge we can do this it all."
He added: "The pond is only about a foot deep and there is more mud than water. It certainly puts into perspective inter-agency working, as we have never done anything like this before."
Don’t you just love it, they have never done an ICE SEARCH before, the safe was sticking out of the water.
The pond was one foot deep, yet it was felt nessary to have the firemen roped to a colleague on the side of the pond, is this health and safty gone mad
