The breakfast plate

May i add my thoughts? I find the inclusion of hash browns in an english breakfast a sad indictment on the "americanisation" of our society. Now don't get me wrong i like hash browns. But why have we abandoned the delicious english Bubble and Squeek? A far superior breakfast inclusion in my opinion. I remember my mother using the leftover potato, cabbage etc to rustle up the next days brekkie. She used to fry it so that outside crisped up almost but not quite to black with the inside piping hot with a runny egg on top........i am salivating at the thought of it.

You just don't see Bubble and Squeek on the menu very often now, except at that Caff in plainmoor.

I honestly don't know how my mum does it, but I just love the way she cooks her spuds to go with the Saturday fry-up. It's basically lovely mashed potato which is then turned into a pan and gets this incredible crust - add in two rashers of bacon, one proper decent cumberland sausage (any more than one would be greedy) a couple of slices of hog's pudding, fried egg on fried bread and bob's yer uncle!

Beats Special K and a couple of slices of toast I tells ya!

I must admit, I didn't see the mint thing coming either.

Nothing against the humble herb. Beautiful with a bit a white wine vinegar on a lamb chop, acceptable in a lamb burger, refreshing as an ingredient in ice-cream...but please, not within a hundred yard of a fry-up!
