George Gillin is a name that has cropped up in the History Room on several occasions. This clip from a January 1972 programme adds some background to his life: Slightly older than the club itself, it appears George Gillin moved to the town just before Torquay United joined the league in 1927. I wonder what was his involvement with the club before the war? On the board in 1945, chairman in the early 1950s and - as Merse and those old programmes have shown - a man who enjoyed close associations with Cardiff and QPR. Also, of course, note his later involvement with both Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City. George Gillin's link with the SW League is also recorded: our reserves were founder members and the league's first champions in 1951/52. The new league must have been a ready made part of the process of withdrawing the reserves from the Southern League. Not sure about Stockport, Lancashire....
