a massive defeat for paulton rovers in the f.a. cup v norwich 1-7.
not quite as big as torquay united reserves inflicted on poor old paulton in i believe the 1955-56 season.
the scoreline being 16-0 played in the western league, possibly torquays biggest score in their history.
not even sure if it was home or away.
i recall harold dobbie, then a veteran centre forward getting a hatful, possibly 6 or 7.

I’ve had a look through Timbo’s programmes (in the nice new programme room – well done Dave, Timbo and Leigh for the idea). The home game with Paulton was scheduled for 31 March 1956 according to the fixtures listed here:torquayfansforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=programmes&action=display&thread=3271
I wonder if Timbo has a programme from April 1956 which would confirm the actual date and the scoreline?
As you can see, we had won 3-1 away at Paulton and had already struck double figures twice by the end of December – 10-0 wins at home to Radstock and away to Barton’s favourites Peasedown Miners' Welfare.
Well, it certainly seems that the defensive arts weren't well-practised up in North Somerset in those days as Paulton Rovers' record shows:
1951-52 WEST-1 34 10 5 19 64-96 25 16/18
1952-53 WEST-1 32 6 5 21 42-125 17 17/17
1953-54 WEST-2 34 12 7 15 69-84 31 13/18
1954-55 WEST-2 34 5 0 29 47-157 10 18/18
1955-56 WEST-2 38 6 4 28 56-157 16 20/20
1956-57 WEST-2 34 7 3 24 50-111 17 17/18
1957-58 WEST-2 34 7 7 20 59-98 21 16/18

Although many people might not have heard of Paulton Rovers before this weekend, they've enjoyed and off-and-on association with the Western League since 1900. Our first team would have come close to meeting them in the 1920s when we were in separate divisions.
In fact, even when our reserves were in the Western League, we made a pretty good effort at avoiding Paulton. After those games in 1955/56 I don't think we faced them again save for single seasons in both the 1980s and 1990s.
I've been to Winterfield Road a few times to see Taunton Town - including one Boxing Day fixture - and it's a tidy little set-up. Paulton seem to have handled the step-up to the Southern League rather better than Taunton and are well-placed to draw upon the pool of Southern League players which has built up around Bristol in recent years. Ex-players include Andy Sandell, Ashley Barnes and Steve Phillips, goal keeper for both Bristol clubs.
Of teams from the old coalfield, followers of Torquay United Reserves in the 1960s and 1970s would have been far more familiar with Welton Rovers from just down the road in Midsomer Norton. Welton, who employed a fair number of ex-pros in those days (some with Torquay United connections), were one of the most successful Western League teams of that era. I guess they must have been flashing the cash....
