I think we have all been at one TUFC game or another where we felt the referee did us out of the result. Well it seems that was the case on the 11th November 1899. Bovey Tracey on this day entertained Torquay United in a friendly match in what was Torquay United first season. The game was referred by a local man who during the whole game made many very debateable decisions, all in Bovey’s favour. Bovey took the lead through a very dubious penalty and then when Torquay United equalised in the very last minute of the game, the referee promptly played twenty minutes of injury time, then awarded Bovey an even more controversial penalty and blew the final whistle as soon as Bovey scored from the spot. Bovey’s rivalry with Torquay United extended into the early 1900’s when Torquay United Reserves were playing Bovey St Johns at Bovey Tracy. The Bovey team were out to win the Torquay and District League (south Devon league) and deliberately prepared a HARD GROUND, the surface was like an iron it was so hard. An hour before the kick-off a Torquay United player had a brain wave and visited the local boot and shoe dealer. He bought eleven pairs of plimsoles and our boys went on to win the game comfortably and Bovey St Johns suffered their first defeat of the season. So you see there have always been dodgy referees around and clubs trying any dirty tactics to try and gain an advantage. I would not be surprised if Timbo has got the programme

The first part of Dave's story comes from an impeccable source.
From the report in the Torquay Times : "As soon as the match was over, the captain of the Bovey team came to Pitts, captain of United, and apologised for the referee, whom he said was the best they could get, and admitted that they were the beaten team".
The second part is from WJ Luscombe's dodgy memory. He suggests this was 1909/10 when TUFC didn't even have a reserve team - the first team lost at Bovey that season, as they had the season before.
Bovey's only TDL title before WW1 was in 1904/05 when TUFC did not run a reserve team. The first team went to Bovey twice that season - a 1-1 draw and a 3-2 win.
Pre WW1 TDL winners:
1903/04 Ellacombe 1904/05 Bovey St Johns 1905/06 Ellacombe 1906/07 Babbacombe 1907/08 Babbacombe 1908/09 Torquay United 1909/10 Dartmouth United 1910/11 Dartmouth United 1911/12 Dartmouth United 1912/13 Torquay Town Reserves 1913/14 Babbacombe Reserves 1914 - competition suspended

No. Babbacombe played at Walls Hill in their TDL days! An even better place to defend their turf against the townies. I wonder if they chased refs the quick way to Redgate beach?
