Bayern - Die Toten Hosen
A great, if somewhat controversial, football song! The singer has an English mother and the band's drummer is English.

The best version is to be found on the DVD En Misión Del Señor - Live in Buenos Aires especially as the band introduce it with some information in English (and Spanish).

Not Frank Turner. Was due to see the song-smith at Exeter Uni this evening but it was cancelled because he was ill. For those not familiar with his work can I suggest you seek out his classic "Thatcher F***ed The Kids" - sorry Phil!

7th Symphony (November Journeys) - George Lloyd
An English composer who is not as well known as he should be. The BBC did do some recordings at one time but could have done more to popularize his work.

Stairway to Heaven - Stanley Jordan
One man - 2 guitars (at the same time). He's also very good when he plays just the one guitar.

......first up, five from a very fine, fiddly-diddly, Scottish folk-rock outfit........
1. Always The Winner
2. This Beautiful Pain
3. Edge Of The World
4. Flower Of The West
and
5. Clash Of The Ash - all by Runrig
also
6. Frosty The Snowman - The Ronettes - a bit twee and Junior Choice I know, but just listen to Ronnie Spectors' (for I believe it is her leading the vocals) mega-shift into a different scale for a descant as she hits the final "oh-oh-ohs" - frankly, imho, musically superb......
7. Room In The Sky - Houghton Weavers
8. Cocaine - Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones (bootleg - with cockups and Keefs' explanations as well!!)
9. Overnight Sensation - The Raspberries
10. Whisper To A Scream (Birds Fly) - The Icicle Works - fantastic!!!!!
11. Famous For Nothing - Dropkick Murphys (Me, Ben Tree and Cav only fans on here that I know of - any more?? - this shower are like all ya Pogues, Dubliners and Saw Doctors rolled into one!!!!)
12. oh yes, oh yes - Stargazer - Rainbow (all 8 mins and 27 head-bangin', star-shiftin', quake-makin', ever-fizzin', cool-soundin', devil-botherin', axe-crunchin' secs of it - let us rock for verily, the Gods of metal still walk the earth)
13. Hurry Up Harry - Sham 69 - some good stuff tonight on here!!!!
14. One Cool Remove - Shawn Colvin
15. Hot Dogs With Everything - The Pogues
16-18. Fairytale Of New York - The Pogues - a classic in the making - three different early versions - various early demos etc - excellent to see how a song is built up by Shane there, whatever your thoughts of the man - he is an absolute master of lyrics production and writing imho and by the last one it is clear to hear that it has just about all come together for him (almost) - as one A Gray might say, take a bow, Shane MacGowan........
19. Amanda - Boston
and lastly
20. Jackson Cage - Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band
PS
Good luck Jessica, the finest sportsperson we have by a country mile pound for pound imho in this land of ours, they announce it in fifteen minutes - a REAL giant amongst sportsmen and women with the cojones of a lion and total dedication - however, I suspect AP will win it, good luck to him as well............

...almost forgot...
Ashtray Heart - Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band
......Captain Beefheart sadly passed away recently - now gone to "The Great Gig In The Sky" - as my learned friend Phil_Chelstongull aka Lord_Tanktop will confirm, a man born years before his time musically speaking, his music as David Bowies' does now, went into areas hitherto unexplored by musical minds............RIP, Captain...............................

.........I have heard some very interesting, festive and Christmassy stuff on good ol' Radio 2 over the last few days......... ............on Radcliffe and Maconie recently - live and direct from Iceland, the delightful Hafdis Huld, with a gorgeous version of "All I Want For Christmas Is You", the Mariah Carey ahem "classic" - she is a lovely singer, quirky and reminds me of Bjork............ www.hafdishuld.comalso "Last Christmas" - a great cover by Jimmy Eat World - far better than the original Wham version........... .......and two versions of "Fairytale Of New York"...... ......firstly, by Billy Bragg and Florence Welsh - adequate....... .....and much, much better.... .....one by James Dean Bradfield (of The Manics) and K T Tunstall - excellent............. .........also........... "Silent Night" - Stevie Nicks (recorded for a charity album in 1987) - superb........ .............and (although my fave Christmas track IS "Hymn" by Barclay James Harvest - originally "Hymn For A White Lady" - about substance abuse)...... www.bjharvest.co.uk/gone.htm..........the greatest voice of them all by a long chalk............... "Ave Maria" - the late Karen Carpenter - exquisite - her voice was, as they say, a freak of nature................. .................................................... Nollaig Shona Daoibh to all youse muzos on here, especially my good friends Phil (Lord_Tanktop aka Mr_Chelstongull aka Scrooge_Of_Sherwell aka Baron_Of_The_Bongos) along with Jon (fellow TBGS'er, Head Muse and Keeper Of The Stats)......... ..............may the bells ring out for YOU this Christmas, mines' a Guinness and Port shandy, "rave on those crazy feelings", as Steeleye Span sang so memorably when covering the Buddy Holly classic................... Chris Donovan Gosport Hampshire PS .......if anyone is interested, and has a spare couple of hours tomorrow morn afore the festivities commence in earnest, theres' Junior Choice on Radio 2 with Stewpot from 0800-1000, for those of us of a certain age only - be young again - I just hope he he plays "White Horses"!.......

Ah, White Horses what a great tune - you have a great Christmas Bully, doubt if I'll see you on Boxing Day - down in the home of Trelawney and clotted cream on top ;D Have Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - Global A Go-Go lined up in a minute. What a great voice and talent that bloke had (managed to see the Clash in Torquay July 1978, Exeter Uni in Nov 78 and in Birmingham and Bristol). The Dumpling beckons after the Carol Service later (just the wife going this year). I'll try and catch an episode of 'Tour of Duty' on FX. Merry Christmas to all....
