This is a follow on from the great players thread.. tufcwewillbeback, I think for your next thread, you should ask for the best team, picking the best ever players in their starting positions, mind you I would struggle doing it, but sure Merse and many more would come up with some great teams. I'll start one and i'll give mine. It certainly will be hard to choose so people might want to make some changes. GK - Neville Southall CB - Matt Elliot CB - Wes Saunders RB - Wayne Thomas LB - John Benson (C) CM - Alex Russell CM - Don Mills RW - Ron Shaw LW- Lee Sharpe ST - Sammy Collins ST - Robin Stubbs 7 man bench GK - Terry Addlington - Darren Moore - John Bond - Tommy Mitchinson - Colin Lee - Jack Conley - Steve Cooper Notes on selection Bond, Mitchinson, Saunders and Cooper seem to be popular with quite afew fans. John Benson was more of a centre half but I was struggling for a left back, I thought Liam Rosenior but he did only play about 12 games for us. Between them, Collins and Stubbs hold just about every goalscoring record for the club. Stubbs is also very popular with United fans and was infact voted our greatest ever player afew months ago in a BBC poll. Matt Elliot was capped 18 times by Scotland though this was after he had left United. Along with Collins, Don Mills and Ron Shaw are widely acknowledged to have been some of our greatest players in a period when the club enjoyed great success. Southall was not young when he came here but was still Neville Southall, once the best goalkeeper in the world. Lee Sharpe went on to play over 200 games for Manchester United. Like Sharpe, Colin Lee went on to great success after a successful spell here. I am sure someone will find a better right back alternaive to Wayne Thomas but i could only think of him or Andrew Gurney. Conley had a fantastic scoring record witch came close to that of Collins and Stubbs. Addlington was the best sub GK I could come up with, some of you may have other ideas. Darren Moore went on to become a successful premiership Centre half and despite his age, has just signed for championship side Barnsley. Alex Russell is simply Alex Russell, no more needs to be said.

I'll be honourable and only include players I have actually seen in the Gulls shirt and on the state of their performance during those matches....................as a 4-4-2: GK- Terry Adlington Back four - John Bond John Benson Bill Kitchener Bobby Baxter
Midfield - Rodney Jack Mal Lucas Tommy Mitchinson Tony Scott
Strikers - Robin Stubbs Jim Fryatt I think that side has balance, domination at the back in front of quite the most commanding goalkeeper I ever saw at Plainmoor, tough tackling and leadership from Benno and Lucas; superb delivery of the ball from the fullbacks - a "metronome like"supply of passes from the "Prime Minister" A glittering array of skills and penetration from the wingers and quite the most dangerous pair of strikers we ever did see at OUR club!

I've seen two people include him now, but wasn't Colin Anderson one of the most left-sided left-backs we ever had?
Great player, yes, right-back surely not!

He was a great player and it was a shame to see him leave after his little bust up with Bruce.

There is one other class player not yet mentioned. He did not play many games for us but in his prime elsewhere he was sheer quality - Tony Currie

Darren Currie is Tony's nephew Dave and I believe he has just signed for Chesterfield. Tony is now a London cabbie, maybe I'll see him out there one day! One of the boys at my son's Arsenal class is the nephew of Paul Furlong who has now been a pro' for 18 complete seasons and has just signed a twelve month contract at Southend United - not bad seeing as he'll be forty very soon and his son is at the Chelsea Academy!

Stu.................regarding your team, Ian Twitchin was NEVER a left back and neither was Jimmy Dunne a wide left sided midfielder. Twitch was a right sided fullback or occasionally a midfielder and Dunney a left sided central defender at his best, and one of the very best we ever had. A pretty mean sweeper too when used in that role and even got his wish as playing up front as a striker on a couple of occasions! I do feel that when compiling a "best" or "greatest" team players need to be selected in their optimum positions which inevitably means leaving someone out of one position who is far better than someone in another when compared in a "pound for pound" equation.
