Of course, you're right it was Alan Wills.
I do remember the games of volley, but I cant say I ever got involved myself. Too busy playing "football" in a packed playground with no more than a small tennis ball usually ... still it did wonders for your ball control. Either that, or cricket, which was equally chaotic!
I well remember the times when the ball (regularly) ended up on top of the gymnasium roof . Then every few months someone, usually Jim Bailey as I recall, use to shin up the drainpipe onto the roof which must have been 20 feet high, and throw the balls back down to the throng gathered below. No doubt he kept a few for himself, but he certainly earned them, and probably paid for it with a detention on the occasions when he got caught!

I do remember the games of volley, but I cant say I ever got involved myself. Too busy playing "football" in a packed playground with no more than a small tennis ball usually ... still it did wonders for your ball control. Either that, or cricket, which was equally chaotic! ..........ah yeah the mega games of "footy" in the big playground - possibly even whole years against each other at times it seemed - I certainly recall a goal-post being chalked or something against the side of the 6th form block - the Wendy House as well possibly - the side of the Gym fitted in nicely with another facing wall up that end and made a good alternate pitch I think too.......... ......you mentioned cricket as well in the big playground Chris - over by the 6th form block? - possibly down the side there over by the outer wall............ ..........I certainly remember it was a loosely written rule that if a batsman was legally caught out by ANYONE in the playground (not necessarily someone actually "taking part" in the game) the batsman HAD to walk - I also recall myself snaffling up (beautifully I may add - now!) a cracking skier from one of the 1st XI (a hulking great 6th former with a 'tashe and sideys) over near the gym just in passing when a game was on once (when I was only in the first year as well for Kerrists sake) - unofficially I believe we were told to ignore the bigger lads games at all costs - yep he HAD to walk as well - sweet Jeez - the looks and comments he gave me for days after, and he probably 17 and me only just turned 11........ ...........hey fantastic memories Chris - thanks for all that! - I'm signing off now - off to work now (night security guard - 2 night shifts) - then heading to Deb'n on Wed AM to look after aging parents in Cadewell Lane while bruv relocates from Cheltenham to "Pointy Head Land" (Launceston).........take care mate........love to meet up with you, Big Rog and Andy for a beer or seven one of these days...............Chris Donovan Gosport Hants

Tim Fuller..... Ian Kerslake ...... Ian Churchward...... Big Rog Metcalfe..... Graham Darke.... Tim lived right opposite the Dumpling - so it was easier for him to stagger home after an evening on the "Courage Directors" than it was for us. He was mates with the son of the infamous blackboard-thumping Maths teacher - also called Tim. Tim F worked for Lever Bros after leaving Southampton Uni, but I haven't seen him for years. As mentioned, Ian K's younger brother Glyn became a star. Website here : www.glynkerslake.co.uk/Ian C used to live round the corner from me - a top bloke who I bump into quite a lot. Lives in Torquay, supports the Gulls and works for a Swedish bank (I think) based in Southernhay. Big Rog lives and works in Basingstoke ,very occasionally posts on here and is known to Brett as a "Hampshire Gull". He is now 9 foot 4. Graham Darke found fame in the sixth form by appearing on Keith Fordyce's "Treasure Hunt" on Westward TV -where he disgracefully didn't know what an epaulette was. The Latin books were red, I think.

;D Brilliant! My brother Nick was a year below us and is (like me) an ardent fan of TUFC. We sit together in the Family stand, along with another name you mention - Neil Darby - who played in goal for what was a very decent school side at that time. It included the likes of Ian Doyle (as you say, earned a contract at Brizzle City) and of course Maurice Cox (who played briefly for TUFC) and Nick Cowell who I understand went on to have a very successful career coaching in the States. You must also remember the time when someone (was it Tony Wills?) played an absolutely brilliant prank on Hoppy? There we all were about to launch into Jerusalem (was it?) when there was this most awful clunk as Hoppy hit the keys of his piano .... they had been stuck together with sticky tape! As I recall, despite the awful noise it made, Hoppy manfully played on until the end.... Ah, Latin ..... tried that in the second year, but didnt last very long .... not for me I'm afraid. Amazing recall of the exercise book covers there , Chris! Sadly Kevin wasnt the only one I know of that we have lost mate, you may recall a big lad called Steve Henley (came from the Leicester area) who joined our year later. He died of a heart attack as I recall when still in his twenties. The prank played on Hoppy at the School Speech Day (and a very formal occasion that was) I think was laid on by Steve Morris (Kev's elder brother) and not Alan Wills.

..........just thought I would pop back with one more name that ran through my mind for you to ponder on Chris - from our 1C days and he was deffo in our class - Nadi Jahangiri - he was Persian I think - very musical - he lived up Perinville Road, Babbacombe I think because I remember now he used to catch the 30 bus home from outside the Public Library in Lymington Road after school and in of a morning of course - Roy Tyler (along with Ian Cooper) was another user of the 30 bus in my later years - Roy had a huge crush (we all did) on a certain Miss Jean Annear (from the TGGS - a Phowarrr rating at the time - circa 1976/7 - of a full-on 10/10)......
.......cheers for now.......

.......anyone who is interested in finding out more about DAS SCHNITZ (as mentioned earlier) - the TBGS band from circa 1978 onwards - just key in DAS SCHNITZ into Google - I must be honest - I never thought of doing this before, the results that come up are, if you were around at the time and remember the lads involved, truly astonishing if you click on the first few links that come up....... (my old classmates from 1C in 1972/3 Chris Pascoe, Andy L and Big Roge m will DEFFO be looking at this one I reckon)....... ...just try this one for size for starters...... www.boredteenagers.co.uk/DAS%20SCHNITZ.htm.....and as for this one.....a re-union gig from a club in the Smoke in July 2009 - yes - incredible I know..... ......this is where tinternet really comes into its' own I reckon....... .......great memories.........

Amazing! Good to see the guys still going strong, after all these years. I can certainly remember seeing them perform live, at a small venue (nightclub?) in Paignton, on the corner of Manor Road. The place was packed out that night, and the noise was deafening - as you would expect! The last (and probably only time since I left school) I saw Stuart Gordon was funnily enough in a pub near Wembley Stadium. He was there for (at least I think it was) our first appearance at Wembley - in the Sherpa Van Trophy Final against Bolton. I mnanaged to share a couple of beers with him, before heading our separate ways. Andy - yes of course, it was Steven Morris - who was probably a year (or two?) above us - probably in the same year as our local (TUFC supporting) MP, Adrian Sanders. Was he also involved in an "incident" that involved the (tiny) caretaker ... where he ended up in a laundry basket being pushed down Barton Road? I'm really not sure of the accuracy of this, but I vaguely recall such an event.

Mr W,
Although most of this means nothin to me and i'm 26 and an ex Bible bashing Cuthbert Mayner, I noticed the name Anthony Bennett I think this may have been my Uncle! Did he have a younger brother named Michael? If it was I will expand more on my next post.

Oh hell, I'll admit it, I went there too. I think I fall between the two groups on here though having been there 1981-88. Started at the old school - tennis balls in the playground, the WendyHouse and long walks up for Games. Then moved to the new school - girls, shorter walks for Games, smell of pig-poo from the farms during the summer. Can't believe Pike's still there, he was quite fair to me during my little 'incident', wish my mother had acted the same! I was demoted (thrown out of) Laird's French and into Pince's. Soon rescued by Mr Davis in Set 2. Top marks in my oral (ooerr!). Remember Rew, Sharratt (sweat and linked gob from top to bottom lip!), Penford (never got on with him after he poked me in the chest in my first year and always used picked on kids who wouldn't answer back), Payne (top man, my mother had the hots for him, won It's A Knockout), Ritson and Two-Ton Tessie. Was in Gilbert House and was made 'Sports Commander' in sixth form - didn't know whether to be proud or embarrassed. Also was there when every Year won the football competition for Torbay. I made the paper for scoring two goals for the 1st Year in the final before being subbed by Penford (of course). The year above me went on to have (I think) the England U-19 Captain, Centre Forward and one who was always sub (Mark Gennard was Cap I think and another one was Dave Penney). The other interesting fact (?) of my time there is that I did one of my A-levels in the Girl's School and the certificate came with the heading 'Torquay Girls' Grammar School' on it! Arse! My own fault with not sticking with normal Geography. To anyone I bullied remorselessly as a sixth-former, I truely apologise but thanks for all the fags I confiscated.
