Just wondered if anyone has any favourite players from the past. Any United player(s) from any period that you loved to watch, weather it was for their footballing talent or their personalities. You can make your own mind up on weather the likes of Neville Southall and Chris Waddle... count as great united players, considering they probably could not have been considered great by the time they came here aged 40 or whatever! I'll start with 3 great players of the past :
Sammy Collins - The clubs all time top scorer, it's unlikely anyone on here ever saw him play, it was that long ago. The period in which he was at the club was one of the most successful periods in the clubs history, I think his 50 goals a season, or whatever it was, may well have had something to fo with that.
Lee Sharpe - Sold to Man UTD young, where he made nearly 200 apperarences. Unfortunatley, he only played for us afew times because they snapped him up so quickly.
Alex Russell - A much more recent grest player, who along with David Graham, played a vital part in our promotion to league one afew years ago. Great passer of the ball, lots of assits, chipped in with the odd goal, never gave the ball away.
Any others?

Good choices tufcwewillbeback. As always there is a difference between favourite and best players.
For me, one of my all time favourites was Steve Cooper, probably because he was a star from my earliest days of visiting Plainmoor. Not the most skillful but always totally committed and knew where the goal was. Like Hilly, his ability to leap for headers belied his height. More recently he has been landlord of the Maltsters Arms at Clyst st Mary but not sure if he's still there.

Well you did say from the past................ !- Robin Stubbs - simply the best and great to know "The Prince of Plainmoor" as well! 2- John Bond - the classiest, coolest and most stubborn guy ever to play for this club I'd say - and a kick like a mule............lived up to his name "Muffin" to a tee! 3- Tommy Mitchinson - makes me laugh when I here people go into raptures over Alex Russell (although he was excellent) the "Prime Minister of Plainmoor" was simply peerless. You see, if you ain't gotta nick name you ain't at the races in this competition!

Paul Dobson scored a last minute goal in 1987 that kept United in the football league, this makes him a great. Not in the same way as some of the others though (lol).
Recent defenders that have gone on to bigger things - Garry Monk, Darren Moore and Wayne Thomas could all be in the running for a centre half spot in an all time XI.
Playmaker Don Mills deserves alot of credit for the goals of Sammy Collins. He's another Alex Russell of the past.

Neville Southall and Wes Saunders instantly spring to mind for me. Paul Holmes also went on to bigger things. Lets not also forget the vastly wasted talent of Mark Loram.

Too many to mention, but Willie Brown, Jim McNichol and Dave Caldwell were the first three names to enter my head. Each great, in their own way. Not necessarily the best players ever to grace Plainmoor, but I certainly enjoyed watching them play.

Andrew Gurney was a pretty decent right back. We also had Liam Rosenior on loan for a short period when Leroy was in charge, so he could probably slot in at Left Back in an all time XI.
Akinfenwa had a pretty decent season for us afew years ago but i dont think he could beat the likes of Collins, Stubbs or Graham to a forward spot.

So many great players to choose from, some for their skill, others for their, give it all in a TUFC shirt and some just because we enjoyed watching them play.
No1 For me it has to be Steve Cooper, brave, good in the air and even with his knackered ankles, gave every ounce of himself, when he wore the Torquay Shirt. I got to talk to him after he stopped playing, I had reason to call where he was living, so shocked when he opened the door, I grew up in a council house, so I'm not a snob, but Steve was in a council flat. I just felt at the time how players like him, never really got much out of the game they gave so much too.
No2 Dave Caldwell, not that we really had him here a long time, but this man. when he was able to keep himself on the pitch, was maybe the best player I have seen in a Torquay shirt. Like Merse I was at Leyton Orients ground where we scored to fantastic goals, such a shame he could not keep his temper under control.
No3 Robin Stubbs and as Merse has said simply the best and "The Prince of Plainmoor"

Another player that deserves a mention is Colin Lee, who of course, had a great time here before joining Tottenham and Chelsea.
Jack Conley and Harold Dobie might also be in contention up front, as would Rodney Jack.
Ron Shaw is often acknowleged as one of our greatest wingers. 2 very recent wingers/forwards who could progress in their careers Zebs and Jamie Ward could get a look in.
Of course Kevin Hill is a great and always will be!

tufcwewillbeback, I think for your next thread, you should ask for the best team, picking the best ever players in their starting positions, mind you I would struggle doing it, but sure Merse and many more would come up with some great teams.

There were fans who visited down the years and some ex players as well. I used to see Steve regularly on the School run and occasionally he and his wife in the village pubs. However as I no longer live in CSM and now my youngest has left the village school I probably won't bump into him much in future. As an aside his ex wife moved in with my next door neighbour and his new partner works in the same building as my wife! All nice people. It's a small world.

I'll start one and i'll give mine. It certainly will be hard to choose so people might want to make some changes.
