Footage from Boca Juniors V Velez Sarsfield last night.
The winning goal was this one. A 40 yard header from Martin Palermo

Martin Palermo - the Tim Sills of argentine football! Quality goal. He seems to have been at Boca forever, although given that they seem to revere him out there I'm not surprised he hasn't given it more of a go in European football - and that he has played so few games for Argentina (although he has recently been recalled by his buddy Maradonna -but then again so has Veron). He certainly has an exceptional record in the Argentine top-flight - I believe this header was his 200th league goal, what a way to score it.

I'll never forget Palermo missing three penalties in the same game the first time the Copa America was shown on Sky (I think) against Colombia and I seem to recall him kicking something after missing the third one and breaking his foot.
I went to the Boca Juniors restaurant in New York back in June and half of the staff were wearing Palermo No 9 shirts....Argentinian steaks of the highest order in case anyone else ever pays the place a visit.
If you are looking for heading of the highest quality and can find highlights anywhere try and find some footage of the game between Hamburg and Hertha Berlin on Sunday.
Hertha, who sacked their coach last week, were 1-0 up and in complete control when their goalie and centre back got in a right old mix up and conceded an own goal - their new coach decided to swap keepers, bringing on a 19-year-old and Hamburg scored two long range goals within a couple of minutes of him coming on.
The first came from him advancing out of his box to do a diving header and clear, straight to an opponent who lobbed him into an empty net.
The second came from him advancing out of his box to do a diving header and clear, straight to an opponent who lobbed him into an empty net.
And yes I did cut and paste there!!

Well well well. What a story from "El Loco" yesterday!! As Peru equalised in the last minute to make it 1-1 - Palermo popped-up with 4 minutes of injury time played to tap-in his first competitive international goal in TEN YEARS to make it 2-1. The drama wasn't over and Nicky Wroe's distant cousin (!) took a shot from the restart that hit the bar!!!!!!!!!!! I would say that in my visits to Buenos Aires, Palermo seems to be the most commonly named shirt on the backs of "Los Xeneizes" on the backs of the famous blue and gold other than El Diego himself.

Martin Palermo was Maradona's last throw of the dice. He told Palermo at half time "go out and resolve this situation for me". He had a 10 year international exile before the game on Saturday. He's loved at Boca because over the years he's scored so many important goals against River Plate.

Should be a belting match tonight in Montevideo against Uruguay who aren't bad at all at home. I would probably put my money on a draw, although perhaps El Loco will do the biz again and save his old pal Maradonna's neck (again)!

I would probably put my money on a draw, although perhaps El Loco will do the biz again and save his old pal Maradonna's neck (again)! My mate Julio, who is a Boca fan but lives in the posh area near River Plate's ground, told me earlier that most Argentina is sh*tting itself over the match in Montevideo. A draw will be fine for them unless Ecuador beat Chile 0-6 in Santiago. But if Uruguay win and Ecuador win they will be out of the automatics and the play offs. Chile, who've already qualified, have the ex Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa at the helm which should ensure that Chile keep their part of the bargain. Chile have been the surprise package of this qualifying competition. There are not that many well known players in the side (ex Liverpool flop Mark "speedy" Gonzalez) but under Bielsa they've played very well. Personally I think they'll get shot of Nick-Nack if they qualify or not.
