Am I imagining this, but did some Torquay United players once represent Torbay in a heat of the television show It's a Knockout? You know...Eddie Waring, David Vine, Stuart Hall and the old football referee Arthur Ellis. I'm pretty certain the event in question took place on Plymouth Hoe and featured a few fringe players such as a young Kenny Sandercock. In that case it would have taken place before Kenny went to Leicester in 1969. Hang on, what's this.... www.jsfnet.co.uk/series_1968.htm Another defeat against the bloody Janners, I fear....but I bet Katie Boyle enjoyed an Ivor Dewdney or two.

I took part in that and you're right; Kenny did also as well as (if I remember correctly) Ian Twitchin and Dave Pook and a few other lads from Newton Spurs. When I was in the Commercial Dept at Plainmoor we also had another "It's A Knockout" series (not for BBC TV though) between the players and staff of Argyle, Exeter City and Torquay United.......................can any one remember those? I expecially recall one event at Sid James' Park (not the real one) when we got disqualified for tying ourselves to a fencing post so that we couldn't be pulled out of position in one of the games and of nearly electrocuting commentator Richard Pitman by trying to push him in the pool when he was wired for sound to the PA system ~ no cordless mikes in those days ~ he went feckin' mental at us afterwards! ;D The leg at Exeter drew an amazing crowd of over 5,000 ~ a lot more than they used to get for football in those days!

Thanks Merse. I vaguely remember the It's a Knockout events arranged by Torquay United but the novelty had worn off for me by then so I wasn't a spectator.
The televised version was a big thing, especially in the late 1960s when we were still fascinated by any type of international television event. And in those days, before too much in the way of live football on TV, all that nonsense almost had the allure of the European Cup itself....
By the way did you use your joker on Plymouth Hoe, Merse?
