Am I just being plain cynical or has the OTP struck yet again during the Manchester derby on Sunday 20th Sep. The fourth official indicates for 4 minutes of added time at the end of the game, the score is tied at 3-3 which seems to be a reasonably fair result as far as most of the country are concerned; four minutes of injury time passes and then lo and behold the ref continues into his own world of added added time. In the 96th minute Owen of Man U scores a priceless winner, Alex Ferguson jumps up and down like a demented two year old and inevitably Mark Hughes is frustrated and angered by the lack of logic behind the refs decision to play on beyond the fourth officials notification of just 4 minutes. Is it just possible that this ref had a dodgy replica Rolex bought off Imran at Accrington Market, or is the real reason more sinister. Was the ref a closet Manu U fan and just wanted to give them enough added time to win the match or is there a conspiracy by a consortium of refs to ''teach upstarts Man City a lesson'' (how dare they try to buy their way into the top four!) Also Mark Hughes reluctance to accept the deliberate way Adebayor studded Van Persie and failure to condemn the 90 yard run and celebration in front of Arsenal fans might have something to do with it! We'll teach them a lesson eh guys? And heres another thought: how often do you ever see decisions against Manu U (penalties/sending offs that benefit the visiting team) But thats me just being cynical again! Any thoughts anyone! ;D

No, no and no! It`s Old Trafford, all refs shit themselves there and all refs are scared stiff of Sir Alex, whether it be soft penalties, added on added time or turning a red card into a yellow, it all happens at Old Trafford ALWAYS in favour of Man Puke, anywhere else not a prayer of it happening! Fact!

Cynical or not you are FACTUALLY WRONGSurely you go to enough football matches to know the announcement off by heart: "There will a minimum of xxxx minutes added on" ~ the figure on the board is the minimum and YOU don't know precisely when the ref begins to add those minimum minutes on. There is also time that can be added on within those additional minutes and stoppages thereon which can mean an additional minimum 30 seconds...................30 seconds minimum for a goal and the restart, 30 seconds minimum for excessive celebration ..................there's another two minutes by my calculation as there were two "last minute goals" yesterday and as I say only the ref knows when he starts the period of time added on anyway. Forget the cynicism and enjoy the spectacle I say! It's not the ref's responsibility to ensure a "reasonably fair result as far as most of the country are concerned" His job is to apply the laws of the game, keep score and report misconduct ~ end of. I thought he did that excellently yesterday, you should try it yourself sometime!

So I guess that I'm just being cynical! Very well put regarding your points Merse, the all seeing and all knowing oracle tells us like it is! I bow to your superior knowledge and understanding of the game! Not quite sure what you meant by the last bit of your reply though mate! This was never meant to be a personal issue, but occasionally, just occasionally, a response comes back from you that indicates an intolerance of anyone who knows less than yourself! We will continue to be enthralled by your superior intellect for sure!

This was never meant to be a personal issue, but occasionally, just occasionally, a response comes back from you that indicates an intolerance of anyone who knows less than yourself! What I was intimating was that the ref who deviates from his primary role in the game in favour of keeping ALL the people happy ALL of the time is taking his eye off the ball to the detriment of doing his job dilligently and honestly. I HAVE refereed, and I found it hugely enjoyable (far more than I thought I would and how I wished I had started earlier); but then I never did mind upsetting people did I!

Thats true and no mistake! Anyway thank you for explaining everything to us mere mortals Merse! I still believe that the ref did Man United a big big favour but as I already indicated, I am probably being very very cynical! A lot of fans up and down the land will probably share my concerns though! Even the guys at Sky Sports News thought it was significant enough to take up the point with a former ref on their programme today.
He pretty much said what you said although he did say that 5 minutes would probably have been nearer the mark in his opinion.
He was also asked about the lack of a penalty at Chelsea for Keano and said he believed that the referee was wrong there and that in his judgement it was a clear cut bang on penalty, but that the ref in that game was unsighted behind the incident! I guess it is just a matter of who the ref is and sometimes where they are positioned as to whether they follow the exact same rules or use their own individual judgement whether it be right or wrong.
One thing that continues to puzzle me in this hi-tech world we live in is why there still no acceptance of the use of accurate goal line technology (cameras etc) as in other sports. There would be more stoppages for sure but at least there would be very little doubt that the decision was correct compared to the human eye where error is very often inevitable, and many many teams and managers would have no choice but to accept the decision because it was actually correct. Take Care!

The Mank derby was a cracking spectacular of a game and Ref was class until the very end and then got Old Trafforded, "ah we will just wait a few more seconds, there thats better Man U have scored so it is now time to blow for full time" it`s either that old egg or the " well I better give them a pen as thats what the poor darlings are used too and after all it is their ground I have to escape from after the match"! How`s that for cynical, people only get like that because their sick too death of it happening nearly every game thats played there, it`s up there with Mr.Wenger`s lack of vision when ever one of his players does anything dodgy "oh I didn`t see it" Boll0x you didn`t see it and you also haven`t watched any highlights or replays either Arsene! Pampered princess premiership poofters!
