I was shocked last night when Ant asked if I was going to the funeral of my nephew this Friday, I had to ask him what he was talking about, he them replied “did you not read it in the paper last week that Sid is dead”.
Well I did not read much of the papers last week and soon had Carol checking all last weeks papers for me and then she found the story and the biggest wave of sadness came over me for so many reasons.
A 44 year old man was found dead in the tent he was living in at Bradley Woods. Yes it was my nephew Sid, well that’s the name he gave himself by deed pool, but he was born Ian Fleming and was the son of a man known to some on here as Shaderack, a man who fronted a band from Newton Abbot in the 60’s Shaderack And The Vampires.
My mind went back to when he was just a baby and I babysat him and his elder brother and sister, he was a rascal then and sadly has he got older turned into an even bigger one. Steve his big brother worked his way from a Saturday boy, up to the UK Manager for Clarks International, big fine house and car and a life style most of us only dream about.
So what went so wrong for Sid? He for some reason just always got into trouble, got mixed up with the wrong people and I believe committed a few crimes along the way. He was married once, but it ended in tears and while I’m not 100% sure, I think his drinking played a big part in his marriage ending and his life going from bad to worst.
I had been told a few years ago, he was living in a friends shed and I feared for him them and what was going to become of him.
Yet when he was working some time before, he grafted harder than any man I know and to see his life end in the way it has, is such a tragedy and sad that he drunk himself to death on his birthday in his only home, the tent in Bradley Wood.
I have had no contact with my sister for some while, I know she did all she could for him, but due to health and other reasons, just could do no more and was unable to turn him around, I don’t think anyone would have been able to if I’m honest.
So sorry Sid mate that your life has ended this way and I hope you find the happiness and peace you so desperately needed.
RIP dear Sid
Love Uncle Dave.
