The programme basics below from one of my handful of visits to the Valley over thirty years ago. It may have especial interest in some quarters: At the time I was doing a course in the Kent/London borderlands. I'd just completed a month-long work placement in Runcorn and, the previous week, had seen a game at Wigan Athletic. Rather bizarrely that meant there was something familiar about the opposition that day at the Valley:

What a team that was! The Charlton game was a top of the table clash and not surprising that Chesterfield lost with Bill Bonnyman and Bill Walker replacing their brothers Phil. Great perms on the front cover and it's possible I might have been sporting one myself at Wigan because I was there at that game and I had a full head of hair in those days. Peter Houghton's two goals second half goals gave Wigan a deserved draw after the Spireites became complacent over their superiority in the first 45. For once, Chesterfield won the replay 2-0 and in the Second Round knocked out those naughty neighbours Sheffield United after a draw at the Lane. It couldn't last, though, and after drawing at Peterborough in the third round the Town, as is traditional, lost at home on the Tuesday evening.
I do like Charlton's ground, by the way. That big grassy wilderness between the Jimmy Seed Stand and its neighbour shows how huge the East Terrace must have been. And they only charged me £5 to get in last season too. Oh, and bugger Blades v Yeovil. I'm coming to Burton on the 12th!

Oh, and bugger Blades v Yeovil. I'm coming to Burton on the 12th! I remember it being a cracking game at Wigan and being hugely impressed by Danny Wilson. Isn't he still in these parts? As for the two Bills - rather than the two Phils - I hope it wasn't a mistake at the printers in, er, Newton Abbot. I like the Valley as well. Chesterfield must have been one of Charlton's "cheap days" that they seem to do a couple of times a season with big crowds to boot. Think it was Barnsley earlier this season: the away supporters having the choice that week between paying a fiver at the Valley and (I believe) at least £35 at Leeds. Glad you've seen sense over forsaking the Yeovile game at the Lane. You'll be more than welcome at Burton....I won't be going anywhere else (weather bloody permitting of course when we may be grateful for the superior facilities at Sheffield United after all).

I remember it being a cracking game at Wigan and being hugely impressed by Danny Wilson. Isn't he still in these parts? Danny was playing, and scoring, against his home town club. He began with Wigan but they lost him to their then more glamorous neighbours Bury before Chesterfield paid out a big fee (reported as £150k but believed to be more) for him, on a Saturday afternoon while I was attending a friend's wedding in Nottinghamshire in the summer of 1980. The marriage lasted about as long as Danny's career with the Spireites but he did quite well for himself afterwards. As we all know, he used to be, as it were, unacceptable, but now he's alright! Rothman's King Size, eh? The best tobacco money can buy and the sportsman's choice of ciggie, obviously. And why are Wigan scoring at Bloomfield Road on the cover of their programme when Blackpool were in the Third Division and Wigan in the Fourth?
