The Herald Express reported that yesterday's game against Bournemouth was the 98th between the two clubs. This morning, consulting a normally impeccable source, I have reason to believe it was actually the 105th (the Herald counting FL, FA Cup and FL Cup only; the other source including Southern League, wartime league, FA Cup qualifying and Johnstones Paint-type games).
And, looking closer, it appears we've played Bournemouth in our first season in the Southern League (as Boscombe), our first year in the Football League (as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic) and, in this, our initial season back in the Football League (as AFC Bournemouth). Additionally we faced them in the FA Cup during our first year in the Western League.
The first Football League meeting was on 8 October 1927, Torquay's 9th match of the season. Bournemouth were actually the club's 8th FL opponents after two early matches against Millwall which included a thorough mauling at the Den.
As for our league opposition from 1927/28, we've already played another - Crystal Palace - in a cup competition this season. Which of Torquay's other opponents from that season appear on the League 2 fixture list for this season?

If so, you might have missed out our very first meeting back in 1910 - a 1-0 win in the FA Cup for Torquay Town over Boscombe. Then you've got one in the Western Counties Floodlit League (only one because floodlights were banned that season!) and one in the Western Counties Floodlit League Cup (both in 1974), two Football League Jubilee Fund games in 1938 and 1939, two wartime friendlies (before the Regional League got going in 1939) and four other friendlies between 1952 and 1983. So all in all, I reckon it was actually our 116th meeting! Or have I missed any?

In defence of my source it concentrates on what might be described as "mainstream" fixtures from 1921 (unless I've overlooked pages from the spreadsheet?). But, as ever, the compiler has shown his willingness to provide additional data. It would now be something of a cheek on my behalf to enquire about youth and reserve team matches. There was, however, that single season when Torquay United Reserves, AFC Bournemouth Reserves and Brixham United were all in the same league...
