I was invited along to the Devon Cricket Cup final at Sandford, near Crediton on Sunday. For those who don’t know it, Sandford is a lovely place to watch cricket with marvellous views across the mid-Devon countryside (as undulating as the outfield) and a cracking club house. For the record, Sidmouth – already winners of the league title – comfortably beat Plymouth with Neil Hancock (a Torbay-based Australian, how many of those are there?) scoring a century. I haven’t watched a local club match for years and was impressed by the standard and the level of commitment. I bet it’s a world away from the club cricket of thirty or forty years away (and, I’m sure, far more vocal). I’m also surmising that money exchanges hands in a way similar to the Western League or South West Peninsula League in football. There certainly seem to be a fair number of “transfers” over the course of each winter and there was plenty of gossip and intrigue to be heard around the boundary rope on Sunday. I’ll certainly have another look next summer. A picture of Sandford from Geograph….

Played there quite a few times with Bovey Tracey (made my first team debut against them) and always one of the nicer grounds to go to. As you have said, very picturesque. They had a really good side a few years ago and would be sad if they ever dropped down the leagues. Barton..if you want to have a look at some Devon League grounds then North Devon at Instow is a must. Plus along the East Devon coast you have Exmouth, Budleigh and Sidmouth. Oh and must of course give Bovey a visit....my favourite ground of the lot
