I've always loved the opening Saturday of the football season, and try to get to a game somewhere even when I've not been able to make it to Plainmoor.
This Saturday should have an extra special feel to it knowing we are back in the football League. There is also a good feeling of optimism among both sets of supporters, everyone starts off equal & hoping for the best.
This Saturday it will be an honour to have the great John Sheridan at Plainmoor in his capacity as Manager of Chesterfield.
Hopefully Paul Buckle will not be over-awed at being in the presence of Sheridan, whilst obviously remembering that as a midfielder he wouldn't have been fit to lace Sheridan's boots, he should also keep in mind that as Managers they start the season as equals.
Above : Sheridan proving he could walk on air...as well as on water.
My first visit to Wembley Stadium was for the 1991 Rumbelows Cup final when Sheridan scored the only goal of the game in Sheffield Wednesday's 1-0 win over Manchester United.
I can still recall Rumbelows employee of the year Tracy Bateman handing the trophy to victorious skipper Nigel Pearson.
Incidentally, what a high proportion of that winning Wednesday side are in Management today, Sheridan (Chesterfield), Pearson (Leicester), Turner (Hartlepool), Wilson (Swindon) Worthington (N.Ireland).
Sheridan also collected 34 International caps and was in the Ireland team that recorded that historic victory over Italy at the 1994 world cup finals. In fact with so many highlights to look back on over a great playing career hopefully he won't be too disappointed if we take all three points on Saturday.
Finally...a little reminder of JC's playing days
