That game at Pennycross would have been at the time when there was still plenty of interest, excitement and pride in the new South Western League. Torquay United were the inaugural champions and retained the title in 1952/53. We would have been friends of the league you suspect.

I have been told on good authority that the first game played under floodlights was Torquay United 'A' v. Halwell and Moreleigh in the Herald Cup. Torquay United 'A' won 9-0. The Halwell goalkeeper for that match lives next door but one to me at Halwell. Did Mr Taylor mean the first COMPETITVE game under lights? Looks like he lost count of how many goals he let in!

It was Edward Pidwell who told me about this match. Sadly he has passed away since this thread started in 2009. I think Jon can put some flesh on the bones.

Very possibly the first competitive floodlit game at Plainmoor. Played 19 February 1958. The Taunton Penzance FA Cup third replay mentioned on this thread was a 2.30 kickoff. TT210258

Interesting read as always provided by Jon the Larry Birch mentioned in the article playing for Torquay A was my uncle. Good player went on to Brixham United when they won the highly competitive Plymouth & District League. ⚽️
