The problem with the ECB is that they seem to forget the real cricket fans who will turn up to matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and charge them the same prices to watch non-Ashes matches at these grounds when the chances of them ever selling out is minimal.
New Zealand and the West Indies have the right idea when it comes to selling tickets as they do it by the match for a much cheaper price (for example the Hamilton Test in NZ was something like £30 for 5 days) or at a slightly inflated rate (£10 from my recollections) if you just wanted to buy a day ticket. Day tickets in the Windies were similarly cheap (sit anywhere most of the time).
The thing the ECB know is that they have a completely captive audience for the Ashes, whatever happens nowadays, much like FIFA have a captive audience for the World Cup and similarly the IRB for the Rugby World Cup - all events of that magnitude, across the board, you would always pay a premium for...even in football, just like for example the FA Cup final where the minimum priced ticket was something like £45 for 90 minutes of action. Makes cricket not quite as bad a value when you look at it in those terms.
In the sporting world as it is nowadays, you won't get owt for nowt, however much you complain about it. And yes, for those who might wonder, it's pretty similar in the USA. Don't expect to ever get a cheap ticket at Fenway Park, for example, where they have sold out for years on end. You can, as Chris suggests, find tickets on the internet through the usual broker sources, if you want to spend £100+, and the same goes for the NFL where because each team usually only plays 8 home games a season, most of the teams sell masses of season tickets at inflated prices, and those who buy them sell on their unwanted games in order to try and get some of the purchase price.
I reckon today's best value would have been £55 for a day's walking around Turnberry watching Tiger Woods miss the cut ;D

2 serious questions, that i didn't hear addressed on TV this afternoon; With the floodlights on is there a different light level reading at which 'bad light' stops play? If the floodlights are good enough for play to continue (as they are for a day/night game) and like today there were still another 34 overs to play, would play continue until all 34 overs were bowled, which in todays case could have been, say 9pm? or is there a cut off time when play stops regardless of how many overs are left? Sorry but I don't know the precise playing conditions...I'd imagine there would still be a time limit, but not 100% sure.

The umpires cannot change to a white ball after the start of a game, in fact even the type of red ball cannot be changed once the game (or in some cases the series has been started. it should also be noted that within five minutes of the players coming off for bad light, they would have been coming off for heavy rain anyway. Stick to footy Merse and leave the cricket to us Tarquins Under the current laws, no. What I am saying is that the laws should be changed to accommodate the current day situation. The ECB have never had so much money coming in, they are obliged to accommodate that to the best of their ability. Clinging on to old time laws is not doing that by any stretch of the imagination. Like I said before it is a matter of applying one's mind to find a solution. The rain is irrelevant, yes of course they would have had to come off for that but it doesn't take away the crass disregard for those funding their game. The point with sky high prices is that the game (any sport for that matter) then excludes the grass roots, those that maintain it's survival at the lowest level and thus those who would produce the raw talent for a more competitive and more dedicated playing pool. One only has to look at the empty seats immediately after lunch to see the attitude of those stupid enough to be paying those prices towards the game they are excluding less wealthy but enthusiastic and dedicated fans from attending. Each time I drive past Lords there are hordes of latecomers dawdling along to the game up to an hour after play has started....................it just shows their passion for the game. They're tired, they're tiresome and they're keeping others out who would die for a ticket but simply can't afford or obtain one. I'll happily leave the cricket to you Tarquins, just as I've left Premiership football to all the cretins who foolishly stump up rip off prices, but when I watch it on the telly I've also paid for that facility and I want to watch cricket and not listen to that Twit Bumble shamelessly bumbling on about his Twitter site.

If there's "bad light" under floodlights then they are bad floodlights.......................the quote was there were "four shadows" beneath the ball ~ like the sun never gives a shadow. Oh come on! It was stated prior to the players taking the field that play would encompass 38 overs for the session or cease at 7.40 pm whichever came first.

I'm sure I heard on the wireless that England haven't enforced the follow on - any reason for that?

I'm sure I heard on the wireless that England haven't enforced the follow on - any reason for that? Make hay while the sun shines, as they say. On what appears to be a flat pitch on a warm and sunny day we could pile up a lead of 550 by the end of today, close to 700 by lunch tomorrow and leave the Aussies 5 sessions to save the game, and with Pontin gs promise of playing in the 'spirit' of the game we are very 'unlikely' to see any time wasting, 1-0 up and in charge. or, middle order collapse this afternoon, all out by the close leaving Aussies 350 to win!! Thats the trouble with the England Cricket team, you just don't know what team is going to turn up at each session.

All over!!!
The series could have been 1-1 had we not skillfully played for a draw in the first match. ;-)

Could have been 1-1 but as they say in cricket "look in the book" and we are 1 up. Terrific performance but will have to be wary of a backlash somewhere. Sure brightens up a monday morning.....
