How many games do we watch, when its the same old debate, was he off side or not. In the good old days there was no off side, hence the term goal hanger came about. All you had to do was wait near the goal, until the ball got there and try to score.
This maybe was why the need for the rule came in, to stop players simply, staying near the goal and move nowhere else. When it came in, it was clear and easy to apply, only the judgment of the linesman, could cause a mistake, but there was no misunderstanding, on how the rule worked.
So why when something worked, has it needed to be kept being changed, it has now got to the point after so many changes, that no one really is sure anymore, who is off side or not.
So could we do away with the rule again, or just make it like it first was, if your standing in an off side position, then you are off side. It would save all the problems, every player and ref would be clear on the rule, or is there a better way than how it is done now.

Hey, we could also bring back tassled caps, knickerbockers, rope crossbars and Lord Kinnaird. They would all make more sense than the nonsense of the present day offside directives which bare all the hallmarks of a committee decision if ever I saw one!

One of the things that aggrivates me most about the offside rule is that the linesman is not supposed to flag until the player reaches the ball. I seem to remember last season, i think it was Lee Phillips that was put through, and the linesman allowed him to chase the ball for about 5 or 6 seconds then as soon as he touched it he flaged. This is just one of those additions to the rule that in practice is largely pointless. I have to agree that the law needs much simplifying as even officials seem not to know it.

When I reffed I always stressed to the linos that what I wanted was a correct decision from them rather than a fast one....................after all carrying the whistle in the hand was always preferred to running with it in one's mouth (Scottish style) as many a second opinion has been performed twixt hand and mouth!

So do you have any views on the best way to apply the offside law. Or is there a better way? do we need it at all? how would you change it?
