Martin Rice has signed a one-year deal to stay with the Gulls according to the club's SMS service. Sort of understand the idea behind it - relying on Bevan to be a completely adequate No 1 and not spending more of the wage bill on true competition for the jersey.
I'd imagine if Bevan were to get hurt, there would be a loan replacement made fairly sharpish and that Martin is around to be a face in training and perhaps on the bench on matchdays.
That is, unless he heads back to Truro City on loan of course - they are in the Southern League Premier as well now so that standard should be fairly decent.

From what I have seen, he is a totally committed young man and should be applauded for his attitude. he has been genuinely happy for everyone's success at the club which is in marked contrast to his time at Excretia.
He has a lot to learn but is showing the willingness to work hard to achieve this. he will be a good goalie one day, if people will give him the chance.
He is a more than adequate no.2.
well done Martin

Truro City got to the Southern League Premier with Rice in goal, so he must have played well, what we do know is he did not let in as many as the teams Truro played last season The problem for Rice will be that some fans just won't give him a chance I'm afraid, it would only take one mistake in goal for us and they will give him such a hard time. One would hope if nothing else his confidence has improved while playing a season for Truro and you would also think playing games every week his game has also improved. Ant did go and watch him play up at Tiverton last season and felt he had not really progressed, but I'll wait and judge for myself should he make a start for us next season.

That is what the Johnstone Paint Trophy (or whatever it will be called this year) is for. Martin needs to be given a chance but has to be better than Jarvie etc

Although he is a good shot stopper (virtually all goalies are) its his positional play and lack of coming out for crosses which is a worry. With Bevan or Poke you know they will come for the ball most of the time and our defence can hold a decent line, unlike Rice who comes out every now and again our defence sit deeper with him there and that leads to problems. Lets hope for an injury free season for Bevan..

That's what coaches are for! If his positional play does not improve in games and training, then what are we paying the coaches for?
