Deciding to catch the second half of Perpignan v Ospreys rugby now the racing has finished on TV, I was amused to hear the wired up ref ask his touch judges "what's the score boys?"Not as unusual as you might think that the ref doesn't know the current score. Whenever I had official linesmen I always instructed them both to keep score - you'd be surprised that with everything else that can go on in a game how far down the list of priorities the current score could become and in a tight game I would quietly check with them both as the closing minutes approached...............and you'd be amused to know that just occasionally their calculations differed!

Merse it really should not be to hard to keep up with the score in a football game surely? I can understand how a ref in a rugby match might have more of a problem,as the scores can go much higher and there are different value points for tries etc, mind you like me you went to Highweek School For Boys, might have something to do with it

My bro' Bryan * did, and one of my cousins - Jeff Ellis left his mark too. His name was STILL painted on the slate roof in great big white lettering years after his schooldays! * Don't confuse him with another cousin though - Brian "Rocky" Merson (they're BOTH painter and decorators in NA and used to work for Zeallys together in the old days) I think first names were in a little bit of short supply in our family!
