Whilst at Halwell and Moreleigh village fair I heard on good authority that Mark is being released. If this is true it will always be a mystery for me why a young local player who seemed to play very well every time I saw him, has not been able to break into the first team. I am not knocking Paul Buckle, perhaps he has very good reasons, it's just that Mark Ellis seems to be a considerable asset and I for one will be sorry if and when he goes.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was to depart, but would be sorry in many ways if he does.
His excellent performance at York in November (?) and the winner that he scored to get that vital win was then followed by not a single appearance until February / March. It must have been a very difficult time for him, although as you say Sam, without knowing why it was the case it is impossible to judge - but the important fact is that we kick-off next season back in the football league so all the selections, signings, decisions and methods have been justified by the outcome.
Anything could happen next season - hopefully Robbo will stay as I see him continuing the form that saw him become a beacon in the relegation team and outstanding at the end of the seasom we have just finished - but I wouldn't be surprised if he left.
I would like to keep Ellis on (do I recall correctly that he signed a 2 year deal last summer?) if his attitude is suitable (I've heard nothing to the contrary) and perhaps see him head-out on loan as I feel that although he is raw, he does have a future in the game. It is very much likely to be a season that sees our defence tested by stronger teams than we faced in the BSP, perhaps Bucks sees that as an area in which he wants to strengthen and feels that the jump between starting less than 10 BSP games and being a force in League 2 is too much?

I have to agree with O2B@P about Ellis - he's still raw and has plenty to learn, but there could just be a bright future for him ahead at our level as at the start of next season, or even higher.
Unless we need to free up wages for other signings, perhaps in areas we need more, Ellis would be an ideal candidate for the Salisbury treatment - going there (or somewhere similar) for a season on loan with the view to extending what I thought was a contract that goes to the end of 2009/10.
At the moment, he's nothing better than #4 choice behind Robbo, Toddy and Hodges, but he's got enough value (I would have thought) not to be completely released, unless there is something going on in the background again - hopefully not!!

When the Steve Woods saga was ongoing did Paul Buckle not say that he saw Robbo and Ellis as the future of TUFC?

By all accounts Marks attitude and professionalism this season have been beyond reproach. Surely he is an asset to the club especially as a squad player. He's reliable, keen and one for the future. I can't see why he would be released, maybe a loan with a recall would satisfy his playing frustrations and bring him on as future asset for us. I hope he stays.

I for one would be very sad to see Mark go, but it would come as no real surprise. I had a good chat with him in the middle of the season and it was clear he was a very unhappy young man.
All young players will have to get in line and wait to get their chance in any side and Bucks has needed to put out the team he believed would get the required result.
With that said Mark clearly felt very strongly that he was being kept out of the side by a player who he felt was a midfield player.
When he has got the chance I always felt he did well and in my view gave man of the match performances in those games. Has he had a long chat with Bucks? maybe he has been told that it could be just more of the same for him next season and if that were the case and I was Mark, I would want to move on.
I can't see it would be a case of freeing up wages, as we would surely have to get in another defender as we would need cover in that position.
Mark has cut a lonely figure before games so many times and I for one think he has conducted himself in a first class way he should be proud of, when you consider how he has been feeling for most of the season.
If he is to move on I wish him well and hope he can get regular first team football wherever he ends up.

I agree that Mark Ellis is "good, but not that good".No sleight on the lad, but I'd rate him fourth choice out of Todd, Robertson, Hodges and then himself........................but whilst I would never have personally gone with him and Robbo as a pairing under the pressure to produce in a BSP promotion campaign, I do reckon they are the pairing of the future if Mark could give this club a little longer to accommodate him. But that is being presumptuous and ignoring his very real need for regular First team football now in his career.........he's just been unlucky to have been in this situation as it has been. Whilst no way appreciating just what a Premier (Bolton) club saw in him as potential First team material there, I reckon he could well turn out to be a very competent and reliable performer at League 1 level at the very least if not Championship football in the future. But that will depend on some careful planning of his immediate future and whilst I would love to see him stay here perhaps it is in his own interests to find an opportunity elsewhere that offers a more immediate First team chance. It'll be our loss though, but sometimes these situations need to be addressed.

Someone 'in the know' was at Halwell and Moreleigh village fair? Was this the mother of a certain youth team player?

Totally agree with Merse and, maybe, just half a season would see him rise up to fulfill his potential. I hope he gives us a shot and Bucks gives him the chances and be less risk-averse.
As for the mother of the youth player - if it was her (whomsoever she would be) - what does that mean for the validity of the hearsay??

I had a chat with Marks dad (who I have known for a few years) a few days before the Play Off Final. After a few moments the subject came up of Lewis being the mascot and of Mark being very optimistic for a place in the Play Off Final team.
Kevin told me that Mark had been unhappy for quite a while at being over-looked at the club. He felt that he had played quite well in a couple of games prior to when Toddy came back from Salisbury and although there was no malice to Toddy, Kevin told me that Mark had approached Colin Lee, and Bucks at the club and had asked where he stood as he didnt feel he was being given the chance to get back in the team and had even said that if he didnt have a future at Torquay then they should be fair by him and release him to allow him to move on to another club where he might get a regular first team place. I believe that he was given assurances that he was part of the clubs plans for the future.
Also I did hear Darryl say on the coach that it looks like another season on the bench for Mark Ellis; so maybe things weren't that positive for Marks playing future at the club and he found out that there were no immediate plans to get him back playing regularly and then asked to be released with immediate effect. I guess he is ambitious and with only a year left on his contract he felt the time was right to go now and give himself a chance to get on in the future. Great shame as I do believe he was in the plans for the future of the Club but players sometimes feel that time is passing them by with each game being overlooked and make the decision to jump to protect their own interests. This isnt just a problem in the Premiership, it affects players in all the lower leagues too. Good Luck anyway Mark. I wish you well in your future playing career.

Yes Grahame young Mark has spent a very unhappy last year at the club and if there is little chance of him getting many games in the coming season, I'm sure he would not fancy a second unhappy year.
If Bucks feels he is not going to get games unless really needed, then for his sake and his own happiness sake, Mark needs to get fixed up with a club where he will get the chance to play regular football.
It night even mean in a BSP team, but I still feel he is a good developing young player who will in time be playing in a much higher league.

If Bucks really doesn't expect him to see much action next season then surely a loan arrangement would be best for all parties?
Mark would get the games he wants/needs and we would still retain a promising young player on our books.
Can't see any benefit at all in just releasing him, as I'm sure he isn't one of the big earners at the club.

I would agree Jerry that would seem the best way forward for the club, as Mark would still be our player and one as I said who will only get better.
It would all depend on how Mark feels, lets be honest he has been very unhappy here last season and may just feel its the right time for him to move on anyway.
I believe if he has been told what is being said, we will see him making his mind up that finding a new club will be in is best interests and not just from a footballing point of view.

I certainly wouldnt want him to go as he has certainly deserved his place. He has had two storming matches one at York and Barrow at home and then dropped.
I know that he isnt the finished article but he does have more pace than our other defenders and we will need that this term. Even though we got promoted we still had one of the slowest defences around.
Ideally in time a Ellis/Robertson partnership would be a real bonus, lets hope Mark stays and fights for his place. Always have the loan situation if he doesnt start the season in the team.
