Don't ever worry about putting your report up later than others tufc01, that may I say was your finest report you have ever written and I enjoyed it very much.
many thanks Dave

I have had never bought into the it is better to watch the game from up high, HOWEVER, never again will I stand at pitch level behind a goal. Apart from being in line with Nicholson’s screamer, there is very little appreciation of what goes on outside the penalty box in front of you. Therefore everything I write about yesterdays game is from this viewpoint and may well differ from what ACTUALLY went on. For just a couple of quid more each you could have had a perfect view from the halfway line, seats; and got a full appreciation of what was being played out. It never ceases to amaze me how travelling supporters will pay out all the money they do to get to a match and then opt for the worst facilities and view of the action. Don't tell me it's to provide a "show of strength" or an inspiration to the team; on yesterday's evidence the vocal support was negligible and on a par with the dismal first half of the players..................so really it is a bit laughable being critical of the team for "not turning up" when the same could be said of the supporters who were there. Oh I appreciate there was little to cheer, there was "no roof", the food was shit etc etc and I'm not demanding an ecstatic response to dross; but really it was a case of playing performance=support=playing performance.

Having struggled for goals and then getting three in our last game(they all went in ;D) I would expect to see Sills and Benyon start up front together again, ************************************************** This will be a very hard task and a really physical encounter and for that reason maybe the manager will replace Hargreaves with Hodges in the midfield role that the skipper usually plays and it wouldn't surprise me to see Thompson play in the link role between either Sills alone up front and Christie coming on with half an hour to go should Sills be feeling the pace on that heavy old pitch of theirs. I'm sure Wroe will play, although the sunshine of Malta to the bitter climate of the East Midlands will be a bit of a culture shock for the lad! I think Robertson WILL therefore hold his place and I hope we include Benyon AND Green on the bench as impact subs. From my point of view retaining quality possession will be the key to this one and for that reason I would not start Benyon who has yet to show that quality away from home. This is what I said BEFORE the game in response to Dave's call for a Benyon/Sills partnership up front. How does that look now in hindsight?

When the teams went through that ridiculous ritual of filing past one another and shaking hands that monster Branston might have won the phsycological battle there and then. He fixed a "Foreman like" stare on Sills which was not reciprocated and proceeded to walk down the line chin jutting, chest puffed out and menacingly staring at each and every one of our players. I fully expected to see a nasty liquid brown stream running down Benyon's leg. Then after Big Guy came Geoghan, Bennett and a whole host of big ugly bastards; by the time little Boucaud filed past even he must have seemed six foot tall to our lot.

Yes merse based on Benyons game at home I thought he should start the next game, until you pointed out how big and physical the defenders he would be facing where and then I made a post to say maybe in that case it should be Green of Christie. Unlike some people and you and many others on here, I do not store information on other teams and their players, I watch a game remember how our players played and forget the rest. its like me watching a film. some people will know who every actor is and who was in what film before, not me I have watched a film with Carol, got near the end and then said to Carol, have I seen this film before. She will answer yes, but I still will have to watch it to the end, because I won't have a clue how it finished ;D I believe my brain is very much like a PC, I have my ROM memory(hard drive) where I store everything that I need too and then I have my RAM memory, this is used to watch films, games of football etc. Only the important things I want to remember will get moved from my RAM to my ROM, once that is done the RAM memory is emptied ready for the next game. Please don't laugh I truly believe this to be a fact.

I couldn't agree more the 'support' was minimal, which is why the Kettering fans came out with the usual "Can you hear the Torquay sing... Shall we sing a song for you.." and my Favourite "We forgot that you were there" I'm not really a singer at games, so i didn't stand there to help with a show of strength, in fact we stood at the front by the fence to make sure we were not stood next to the young un's who like the sweary songs. The reason we were stood where we were was more to do with not knowing anything about the ground and asking the 'stewards' outside the ground where the away supporters were and being told that it was in that end. I asked if there was a section in the Grandstand for away supporters but he told me that bit was not open for away supporter's today. I'm not usually very good at sharing a stand with opposition supporters, it winds me up a bit and takes away the enjoyment from the game, i also find it hard to bite my tongue if one of them has a go at our team/players.

Well. It was a cup of Bovril made for men wasn't it? It went down the hatch very nicely with the superb Chicken Balti Pie and Chips. I did enjoy the accent of the Burger Van Supervisor lady who was on the walkie-talkie trying to track another batch of "poys" to sell to hungry Torquay fans. Chicken Balti in a pie. Marvellous.
I had a nice drive up from London via Northampton and then via the pretty little village of Pytchley after some clown at the Highways Agency closed off the A43 just before Kettering.
Yesterday was my first visit to Rockingham Road and what a mixed bag that ground is. Two open slopes, the first Cantilevered Stand in the UK and one side that looks like a Brazillian "Favela". I enjoyed a nice pint of whatever was in the end pump in the poppies social club before the game.
I have to admit that I missed the build up to both of their goals but after the first 40 seconds we were woeful and looked like zombies. I could kind of see where Buckle was coming from by starting with Benyon but it needed good service from midfield and Benyon possessing a good first touch. Neither of these were forthcoming and neither was the aerial route via Sills an option has he was up against what appeared to be the Predator. In the opening stages we needed the ball to stick up front, which it didn't. Both Thompson and Wroe were ineffectual against their midfield.
Carlisle was poor yesterday and Dsane seems to have developed a "Kenwye Jones-esque" first touch. Nicholson, exocet free kick apart, was awful defensively.
Things brightened up after half time. The introduction of Green and Carayol pepped things up a bit. Carayol in particular showed pace, skill and trickery but there needs to be more of an end product rather than deep crosses from the Tony Bedeau "deeper than the marianas trench" crossing school.
To be fair to the boys yesterday we've played a lot worse and won. It's just not good practice to give away two cheap early goals against a robust half decent side and expect to come away with any points.
My day was spoilt more by the bollocks being spouted by the chimps standing behind me. One of them seemed to attach the word "knut" to Dsane at every oppportunity and seemed more interested in supporting the substitutes rather than the 11 on the field. I shake my head and hope that one day they'll feck off. I felt sorry for the poor feckers who had to share a coach home with them. A coach which seemed to have driven off without them after the game, or at the very least had a driver who drove around the block to put the fear of god into them.

Please don't laugh I truly believe this to be a fact. I'm not laughing at anybody when it comes to memory.......................I struggle to get my kids names right "under pressure", haven't a hope in hell of remembering my grandchildren's' (5 of them) birthdays and once even went home to my former home in Hackney instead of the one I was living in over in Dagenham.......................bloody good job I came too and didn't knock the door or my ex missus would have had me! However, stick me in front of a football match and I'll retain the formations, tactics and strengths and weaknesses of all the players (but STILL struggle with the names) and retain it for ever. Let me see a young player playing in youth football who shows exceptional promise and I'll remember him forever (except the name) to the extent that in the instance of Kettering's Andre Boucaud I can recall seeing him at Tottenham in the under 16s and a lot further down the line of his varied career at Aldershot and Peterborough always showing brilliant technique, awareness and ability. When they "re-appear" I get busy and trace them back to where I first noticed them. I wonder how many of the emerging young players I see around this area now will re-emerge and at what level? Some at the very top and some at the level OUR club plies it's trade...............that's the nature of football and footballers. some make it, some don't and some have to settle for as far as they could get. One thing is for sure, any parks footballer or parks football fan who reckons you could fashion a team of pro's from that level hasn't a clue as to the tremendous levels of technique and dedication even the most common "Terrace Donkey" has had to acquire just to play at any pro' level.

I enjoyed a nice pint of whatever was in the end pump in the poppies social club before the game. They call that premises "The Tin Hat" locally Chris...............whether that's because it has a tin roof or one is needed due to the low ceiling I'll leave to your conjecture. Being a short arse, that sort of thing wouldn't bother me; but on entering the dingy little "shebeen" I was turned temporarily blind due to my speccies taking their time to lose the shading effect on the lenses!

I could never keep my mouth shut ,sit on my hands and listen to home supporters comments. Next game...take your blanket off your legs and come and join us ;D

I did enjoy the accent of the Burger Van Supervisor lady who was on the walkie-talkie trying to track another batch of "poys" to sell to hungry Torquay fans. I'd imagine Kettering would be a joy to the student of linguistics. An old Northants accent mixed in with East and West Midlands with - quite possibly - something vaguely estuarine wafting up the A6 along with earthy East Anglian coming off the fields to the east. And, of course, a dosing of Corby Scots from the days of the steelworks relocation. I've a friend in Newcastle who I initially thought was from the North East (but not quite Tyneside). Turned out he was from Corby, of Northern Irish stock, with a sister living on Rockingham Road, Kettering. It's amazing to think that steel production started in Corby in the 1930s but has now been gone since the 1980s. And, by the look of this link (oh, dearie me) - www.corbyloyalrangers.co.uk - it looks to be an ageing community. And naturally, just for good measure, a couple of Celtic establishments: The Domino Inn (Corby Emerald CSC & Corby Shamrock CSC) and St Brendans Catholic Club (St Brendans Centenary Corby CSC and Corby 67 CSC). Yes, I think Corby Town would be an interesting trip sometime....

...I have to say that the atmosphere in the away end was strangely subdued yesterday....even before we went two down. I guess these open away ends arent condusive to making a lot of noise but it was unusual to not hear any singing of note at all for the whole game. It was almost like being at plainmoor I sit at Plainmoor but normally enjoy the away end for away games......the view of the game is crap though.....if i go to Kettering again i think i'll join merse next time. At least you could have a f*g in the "open air" without being threatened with a banning order......which is the case at Plainmoor.

Almost reminds me of an unfortunate incident at Bournemouth one season when I put milk in my Bovril. After thousands of Bovril-enhanced games, these things happen don't they? I think it's a twee South of England thing Barton, I thought the widowed matrons of Bournemouth ALWAYS took milk with their afternoon beverage. Then again at Woking (or was it Wimbledon?) last season I was served my Bovril as asked and the disinterested girl who handed to me said in an automaton's voice "Milk and sugar on your left, sweetener over here".......................to be honest I thought she was referring to her tits! Merse. Believe me you would have remembered if it was at Woking because you would have spent about an hour queueing up! I was also in the main stand, great view but couldn't find Merse at half time. Were you hiding from me Mr Merson??
