Rob there are some game where playing 4-4-1-1 might work and may be the best way to play, away to Lewes was not such a game and the views were we looked poor and in the end beat a very poor side.Southport was also not the right game to play that system and we got what we deserved and that was nothing. Some games where it might work? Like the 7 (SEVEN) we have won - at Cambridge, FGR, R&D, Ebbsfleet, York, and Weymouth before a perfectly acceptable (in light of the FACT that it followed the immense effort v Coventry so soon afterwards) and clean sheet defensively job done at Lewes. You say the views, you should re phrase that to read some views. I don't think we were that bad at the Dripping Pan nor that good for that matter. The opposition need to be beaten no matter what is put in front of you. I think the problem is that some reactionaries STILL see the "1" up front and scream "oh but that's defensive"...................nothing of the sort - it gets the wide men forward into space and provides for a valuable fifth man joining the midfield when the ball needs winning back. By moving the wide men forward, advantage is taken of the home team feeling the need to push more men forward to entertain their fans than they would when playing away. The other good point of the system is the FACT also that a significant number of sides are lining up now to limit us to a point at their ground i.e. playing for a draw at home or trying to tempt us unnecessarily forward and hit us on the break as Lewes did. In reality 4-4-1-1 has given us victory against a side like FGR who really came at us and Lewes who never really came at us at all. You can make a valid comment on Weymouth Dave as you were there, but where is the validity of your comment that "Lewes was not a game to play 4-4-1-1" ?

any thoughts about which British grounds (I'm using the term deliberately as opposed to "English") are closer to the sea than Plainmoor? Without giving the matter any research and thinking off the top of my head.......................I'd suggest Arbroath, Grimsby, the old Swansea at the Vetch, and if you want to go really smallsville.............. St Cuthberts in Kirkudbright, which sits on a low promontory with water on three sides of the ground; and that arse of a pitch down at Beesands! Now if you want to talk "racecourses" - how about Laytown in Northern Ireland where they have races "under rules" at low tide for over a hundred and forty years. Everything, rails, finishing line and start have to be put up and taken down between high tides so that racing can take place on the firm sand of a low tide!

Of senior grounds I'd go for Arbroath - right next to the sea and an amusement arcade called Pleasureland (hardly a name for a football ground). Pictures from Geograph: If you're happy to count the very top end of the Moray Firth as the sea, Inverness Caledonian Thistle would be a pretty close runner-up. I saw them play Aberdeen two or three years ago on a glorious day and it was great. On a wild day it must be hell. And for a ground on a sea front - dunes, beach, amusements, cafes, the lot - you can't do better than Aberdeen (which may surprise). Just remember to take the correct turning when you leave the ground and, again, not at its best in a frisky gale. And, lastly, a Geograph picture of Beesands:

Ah, Beesands - how any of us (former) South Devon League players have plyed their trade there? My last time at Beesands was utter farce..................I was reffing a lowly Div 6 game I think and it was the usual sand in yer nostrils sort of day that the place never seems to fail to come up with and I wasn't too happy to be going there as my usual "South Hams swap" with old Bill Webster (he just loved the South Hams and would take a game off you down there anytime) hadn't proved possible as he was away skiing with his Westlands School pupils or something. I had just given the home team a free kick on the edge of the opposition penalty area. I stood with my foot on the ball to get the defensive wall to retreat ten yards and clearly told the attacking team to wait for the whistle, with that some ruddy oaf took it in his head to take the kick quickly and missed the ball totally taking me out from behind so that I ended up clean off my feet with a severely bruised Achilles tendon. There was no way I could carry on and all the teams were worried about was that the match would have to be abandoned. "No it doesn't" I informed them; "all you have to do is agree on a replacement - why not use one of the two club linesmen? - and carry on". They then had the cheek to ask me to stand on the touchline and "observe procedings" in case anything controversial occurred..................needless to say I politely declined! I'm sure they thought it was Barcelona v Real Madrid ................and they still had to drive me in my car back to NA with another one following to get the "chauffeur" back to the South Hams.
