I have not had chance to read any posts yet, so here it goes with mine. Great vocal crowd today of 3,031, nearly 50 from Crawley, sponsors MOTM Todd, or should I call him Terry Butcher as I shall explain later to those not there.
My experience started at 2.45pm expecting the normal half a dozen in the queue. Instead all turnstiles going into the Family Stand had queues trailing a long way back. A welcome sight. At the start of the match the atmosphere was electric, chanting on all 3 home sides the home crowd played their full part today. The Pop side today was impressive chanting along to a drummer incessantly for several minutes at a time.
Onto the match and Torquay looked confident and played some good stuff at times. However there were few clear chances created, and Crawley broke dangerously and played some good, crisp football. The warning signs were there when Crawley took the lead. A well worked move on their right put their player in the clear who pulled the ball back to a free player who scored from close range. A goal of quality and I don't think you could blame our defence. Torquay's only clear chance until then had been from Sills who was clear on the edge of the area. His shot was comfortably saved by ex-Gulls keeper Raynor. Sills had a great chance to equalise just before half-time follwing great work from Sturrock who beat his man on the by-line. Sturrock passed the ball back to Sills with the goal gaping, but Sills dreadfully screwed the ball wide.
Half-time and then a really bizarre moment. Sprinklers had been watering both goal-mouths to such an extent that the goal Rayner went to had large puddles in it. This held the game up for at least 5 minutes and on came the groundsman with his fork ! I don't know what that was all about but it helped nobody, least ourselves. Raynor for the record had decent applause from the Family Stand when he came on for the 2nd. half who in turn clapped back.
The first 20 minutes were pretty flat. Todd went off for a few minutes for a head wound. Crawley nearly made it 2-0 as a header came off the crossbar and bounced on the line. Todd went off 2 or 3 more times as he was bleeding again. He came back with a Terry Butcher like head bandage which then fell out of place. Crawley by this time were looking dangerous.
Torquay's last throw of the dice was a triple substitution. Off came the 2 wingers Stevens and Carlisle and on came Carayol and Dsane. Plus off came Sturrock who did not look very mobile and on came Benyon. This had the desired effect and Caroyol was absolutely sensational. He seemed to be everywhere and was using his tricks to great effect creating chance after chance. Carayol was desperately unlucky not to score himself after cutting in on the left-hand side and unleashing a scorching shot from 20 yards that Rayner tipped onto the crossbar. Torquay were now resurgent and Dsane had a similar effort saved. Benyon had 2 decent chances, one he could not quite latch onto a Carayol cross, and another when clean through that was expertly tackled from behind. 5 minutes of extra-time and Torquay pushed up to such an extent that they had no defence left. Crawley broke away and scored to a deadly silence at Plainmoor in the 92nd. minute. Out poured the home crowd, but those who stayed gave the team a decent send off for their efforts. Evans and Raynor punched the air in delight as they left the pitch. Love them or hate them but they are a canny bunch who once again got the better of us.
As for today's performances. Bevan dropped one cross that nearly cost a goal, but apart from that did fine. It's great to see Mansell back with his industry at right-back and he made some great defence-splitting passes. The defence looked solid for the most part but were undone at times by some slick Crawley play. Our midfield lost its battle for much of the match. However Carayol transformed our play when he came on and at times it seemed he was taking on Crawley single-handedly ! Dsane also did well when he came on. It was probably not a good match to play Stevens. He did link play pretty well but there were times when he lost the ball due to his lack of strength. Carlisle was good at times and was involved in some delightful moves in the first half. In attack Sills again showed his lack of finishing when the ball is on the deck. Sturrock I don't think was fully fit and this affected his game. His hold up play was still good. Benyon looked lively but perhaps could have done better with 2 good chances.
So there we have it. Let's now focus on the play-offs !

Just home from the game. We were never at the races today. We were second to every ball and not one of our forwards were going to score even if we had taken Simon Raynor out of their goal. Good crowd and atmosphere and the whole crowd got behind the team so there can be no complaints there. The sad excuse for a man that Evans is, got his tactics right and they totally out muscled us across the park. They were in our players faces from the first whistle, and they literally bullied us off the pitch. The referee was useless and gave no protection to Sills or to Sturrock. Their defense led with raised arms all game and all over the top tackles were applauded by Evans and Raynor. That said, however useless the referee, however obnoxious Raynor and Evans were, we were second best today. I just hope that we do not meet a team in the play offs with that sort of game plan because if we do, sadly I do not think that this team of ours will be up for it. We can play good football against teams that give us the time and space to play but cannot cope with the 'in your face' attitude shown today. For all the 'cheating' or goading done by Evans prior to the game, that will be overshadowed by our own incredulous actions at half time. The watering of the goal mouth which left standing water, probably an inch deep on the pitch made our club look fools. The fourth official came over to the groundsman and said, "What the hell are you doing"? He was met with a shrug of the shoulders and then told him to do the same to the other goalmouth to make it fair! Whoever gave the instructions to do it should be held to account. It made us look stupid and not a little desperate! Rant over, looking forward to visiting Salisbury!

Was sad to see that brough being recalled didn't make a difference he didn't even play would have been interesting to see him again with toddy. Oh well can't all be bad as saw dave and john after the game! 3rd place game in hand, CAMBREDGE WERE COMING FOR YA ! LOL

Next Sat will be a telling weekend. StevenagevTorquay and HistonvKiderminster the latter two looking the more vulnerable to Oxfords late surge and Stevenage will be all out next week to try pinch our place. Salisbury now seems to take on a huge importance. Who's going to miss out?

Expectations, expectations where do they get you? I said in the week our problem has always been when ever we take two steps forward we then go and take one backward one. We looked nothing like the side who beat Kettering so well only one week before and Burton last Monday night.
We had chances to score in this game but failed to take any of then and so often gave Crawley all the space they wanted to play in. I did think some of the Crawley players were far too physical and got away with far too much, but it’s not their fault we failed to match them on the pitch.
I looked at the size of the Crawley players and was surprised Bucks had gone with Stevens, mind you I felt he did a good job and if we had players who could convert the chances his hard work created, we might have got something out of the game.
I thought we started brightly enough, but the signs were there after 5 Mins when Sills found the ball on his left foot just inside the box, but hit his shot high and wide. It was only a minute later and Crawley raced down our end and sent in a good shot from outside the box, Bevan saved the first shot but dropped the ball and had to grab it at the second attempt.
Quinn is any ugly big defender who ruffed up Sills for the whole game and rightly got booked after 10 Mins for a nasty foul on the halfway line. We took the free kick only for Quinn to foul Sills again right on the edge of the box, Carlisle took the free kick but send the ball wide of the left hand post.
Just one min later Sills rushed through to the edge of the box and fired in a shot that Rayner saved but not too well and he then had to scramble to gather the ball. On 11 Mins Wroe went on a good run and hit a good shot across the keeper that must have taken a defection as a corner was given.
I was thinking at this point we had made the better start and a goal would surely come soon for us. On the quarter hour mark Danny Stevens made another good run and played a good ball into the box, it was there for Sills to bury it, but it seemed to come of his heel? and back towards the edge of the box.
Crawley always looked dangerous going forward and a great cross field ball by them saw Nico beaten to the ball that was whipped into the far edge of our box, a good header saw the ball directed toward the penalty spot and their NO 8 could not grow the extra inch that would have given him the chance to get the first goal.
We were still playing some neat football and a great move between Sills and Sturrock ended in a shot just wide of the post. We started giving the Crawley players even more space and Hargreaves in my view looked worn out for much of the game, he did have a good run around the 35 Min mark but the ball got away from him and he lunged in as Quinn got to the ball and got booked for the tackle.
On 38 Mins Crawley played another good ball out wide on our left, Robertson was easily beaten and a ball was driven across our box and a Crawley player was there just to bury it into our net. We could have no complaints as we were so guilty of standing off the opposition and not closing down quickly enough.
We should have gone in at half time level and the miss by Sills only sums up his less than convincing display today, Sturrock did well to keep the ball in before it went over the goal line, passed it to Sills to hit first time and the shot was so poor it had me shouting out how rubbish it was. Stevens just after that fired in a good ball into the box, but no one was able to get a shot away and the danger was over.
Strange events at halftime, the goal was watered at the family stand end, then they did it at the away end, Poor Bevan came out to warm up as he does and could not use the goal. In the end it was turned off only for the forth official to come up complaining. I think he might have been saying that the other end got watered longer, but I’m not that sure, but it was then turned back on again.
Then Rayner came out to start the second half and must have complained about all the water in the goal mouth at the family stand end, so the groundsman was called and had to go and start forking the goal mouth, what a farce all that was.
We got worse in the second half and could have gone another goal behind and were only saved by the crossbar. A Crawley player send in a good cross into our box and Mansell did well to head it out for a corner. The corner was taken and a good header saw the ball crash on the underside of the crossbar and drop down to Bevan who was on the floor and he was able to grab hold of it.
On 55 Mins there was a big shout for a handball in the Crawley box, not too sure about it myself as I did not see it that clearly, but nothing was given and at that stage I would have taken anything to get us back into the match.
Sturrock had limped away from one challenge in the second half and it was no surprise to see him going off, I did not expect to see all our three subs come on at the same time, but Benyon came on for Sturrock, Dsane for Stevens and Carayol for Carlisle. I thought Carlisle was having a reasonable game and was surprised he went off, I was also worried we might lose Chris Todd as he got a cut eye in the game and had to wear a bandage around his head for the second half.
We still created some chances but did not make the best of them, Carayol put in a good ball from out on the right but Benyon could not get on the end of it. Dsane hit a good hard shot, but it was at the keeper who saved it was ease. It was Carayol who came closest to scoring, a good run in from the left hand side saw him fire a fierce shot that I believe Raynor saved and pushed it up onto the crossbar.
Then we saw Benyon racing through clean on goal but was far too slow and got tackled in the end just inside the box before he could get a shot away. We were pushing up far too many players and always were in real danger of getting caught out by break outs by the Crawley players, Wroe lost the ball on the halfway line very cheaply and it was two against one at the back, a good pass was played and the Crawley player went around Bevan with the ball, but could only find the side netting.
We did have the ball in their box a few more times, but it was like it has been in many games this season, a case of an over crowded box and more hope we could score than any real chances we created. Then we saw yet another break away by Crawley and this time it was three V two, the ball in the end was played to Matthews who hit it clean and low under Bevan’s body, a goal that made me feel really sick and I have not felt that way for a very long time at a game. We got what we deserved and that sorry to say was nothing.
Time maybe to forget about going up as champions, maybe the fans singing that we would do during the first half had a jink on the final result. Plainmoor was full of good noise today and could do no more to help the team on, the drummer was first class(nice to have someone who can play it properly) we did get the c word song again and that just made a bad day even worse, but who cares our team did not do the job and that is all that really matters.

Bevans half time warm up with Kenny Veasy was interupted by the groundsman aiming the water sprikler at the goal area . Scott enquired what he was doing and I saw the guy seem to bad mouth him and told him to use theother goal. Scott and Kenny didnt look to pleased.

Well what can be added to the posts so far on todays game....I have to say that Steve Evans has to be the most odious toad there is in football along with that cheat that is fat cheating bastard Ranyor.
How Evans has assembled a good team, and they are a good team especially their two wingers who ran rings around us. They were the better team and we just seemed second to the ball most of the afternoon.
How Sills missed his 'sitter' in the first half (must be my fault for voting for him as Player of the Season) when he only had to side foot the ball into the net. Unfortunately Timmy chose to blast the ball with the outside of his right foot.
Half time - 1 nil down and no complaints.
The half time 'entertainment' of watering the Family Stand goal in readiness for Simon Rayner (who IMO didn't have a bad game) to a stage where a) the fourth official spotted the 'tampering' as did the ref who insisted that we fork the water away. I have to admit that who ever ordered this has made the club look a complete tom.
The three subs changed the game and we seem to reclaim the game on the wings - I made Rosco's shot on 80 minutes (or so) the first shot that their 'keeper had to make. The tempo was upped and we forced Rayner (or is it Raynor) into several good saves.
Caught on the break (thought there should have been a foul awarded to us first) and 2 - 0. With Burton winning 3 - 1 our auto chances I think are gone........
Finally a word on the officials - the ref seemed to give 'carte blanche' to thugs like Quinn to commit GBH on Sills with no penalty. I also lost count of the number of times they fained a head injury, only to bounce up once play had been stopped.
The lino in the first half (Grandstand side) gave an offside where there appeared to be at least two Crawley players goal side. We were almost in line. My gaster has never been so flabbered.
In the second half, Greavsie seemed to be pulled back/down with no penalty given and their sub (Matthews I think) had his arms around Robbo in a bear hug - surely Tommy the popside lino (Deaf, Dumb and Blind, he sure played.........) must have seen it.
Nice applause for the team at the end, cheered up a bit when Exeter only drew and dropped out of the auto play offs.
Thought Sturrock had a fairly okay game - the problem with dipping into the loan market. Christie as well..
Lets make sure we end the league season in top form.

A bad day at the office and we have to move on. There are many salient points already given in previous posts. Given that Hargreaves had announced on his blog that he was not feeling too great on Friday night, I was somewhat surprised to see him included. One cannot fault his commitment and work rate but he was clearly off the pace, along with many today. Our poor home form, this was not one of those occasions where a team sat back against us, concerns me, particularly from a play off perspective. Bucks has a difficult task in terms of selection on Monday does he look to freshen things up or should he adopt a settled side approach and seek to get his best team in order to regain momentum going into the playoffs. He has last years experience to call on and we will see if this time around we can achieve more than we did last season. Difficult for any player to stand out today but Carayol demonstrated why he is a “project” worth the effort despite the fact that we have no reserve team. Whichever league we find ourselves in next season he will be an improved asset. We still fail to take sufficient of our goal scoring opportunities. Try as I might to like Benyon, today’s effort just confirmed for me that, at present, he is not good enough at this level. Physically still lacking, although certainly stronger than he was last year, he was maintaining some lukewarm enthusiasm from me because he was popping up with the odd goal. Today however he blew 2 gilt-edged opportunities.
As to the “Watering” affair. It seemed to me that we had a deliberate approach to water the goal in front of the family stand. Someone from Crawley complained and the 4th official was dispatched to order our ground staff to treat both goal areas equally. Some over enthusiastic watering left standing water in the goalmouth inside the 6 yard box. The referee quite rightly wanted that remove before starting the second half.
Right now the last thing I want to do is spend a wad of money going to Salisbury on Monday. I have taken heed of Merse and no doubt tomorrow I’ll be thinking about going again

Andy lets be honest you have said all season you were concerned where the goals were going to come from. I tried to keep believing that things would improve and we did have a run of some games where we found scoring a bit more easy.
The sad thing is we have missed far more chances and in games we needed to win and what gets me mad is that it has come down to just poor finishing and nothing else.
We have made real good chances and how many games have we seen at home where the other team only get half the chances but take at least one or two of them.
We can only hope we get the goals required in the last remaining important games and they will include the play- off games, but I would not like to put any money on us taking the chances we should and will need too.

Well, I hope the inhabitants of The History Room in 2049 remember that fleeting glimpse of the championship which tempted some of us over the last five days. It was fun whilst it lasted and yesterday brought us down to earth with a bump. As has been said, Crawley certainly did "a job on us" and seemed to have us "well-sussed". And they had some good players as well.
I thought the first half was actually a good game between two teams that were playing well and, during that spell, I passed comment that I would stick with this line-up - more or less - for the rest of the season. I say more or less because I can't make up my mind whether to go with Dsane, Stevens or Carayol as a starter. My opinions shift between the three and I must say Carayol did well when he came on yesterday. In midfield - to state the obvious perhaps - I'm of the opinion that if we are to win promotion via the play-offs it will, in no small part, depend on outstanding performances by Wroe and Hargreaves over the three games. There are some nags in my mind but I'm keeping faith in the pair putting together a string of games in the manner of, say, Saunders and Elliott at the back in 1991. Let's hope.
When I returned home from Buckland last night I had to wryly smile at the Why When We Get A Crowd? thread. Seeing so many people leave when the second goal was scored - and hearing the "same old Torquay" comments as I walked down Plainmoor Road - made me feel just the same. I guess yesterday's extra thousand is our "missing thousand".
As for the watering of the pitch, it was more of mystery at our end of the Popular Side because we couldn't see the standing water. Once there was activity involving players and officials it became obvious to most of us that the mark had been over-stepped and flooded in the process. But this didn't stop Mr Impatient - who stands just along from me - from berating the referee and officials with one of his customary "Get on with it!" demands which usually follow within 0.3 seconds of something happening. I suspect Mr Impatient - known especially for his apoplectic behaviour when the oppostion steals a centimetre at a throw-in - isn't a bad sort but there are times I fear for his blood pressure. However, I have reason to believe his alcohol intake helps alleviate the stress he appears to bring to every match.
With luck he won't be standing next to me at the Salisbury and Stevenage games which, of course, are more important than ever now.

I largely agree with Barton Downs. The water sprinkler thing was a bit strange - it appeared that as they had only watered the goal that Rayner would be in for the second half the 4th Official ordered them to then water Bevan's goal, which is why he was forced out by the groundsman. The amount of standing water they left in Rayner's goalmouth was ridiculous though and it was right for the Referee to insist it was removed. As for the performance, I didn't think it was that good. The way the team is set up seems perfect for away games to keep things tight - flat back four, Hargreaves and Wroe solid but pretty unadventurous in the middle, Carlisle industrious but equally unadventurous on the wing, one 'real' winger, and two strong forwards looking for the high ball but lacking from any real pace. This works fine for away games where you need to keep things tight and can hopefully hit on the break or from a set piece, but this is not affective at home, where away teams are happy to sit back more (like Torquay away). I would like to see Torquay play with two adventurous wingers at home - certainly somebody wily like Carayol, and then either Dsane or Stevens, and let the solid but less effective Carlisle drop back to the bench at home. We should definitely stick with Wroe and Hargreaves for the moment, but one of the two, probably Wroe, needs to give more going forward at home. Also, I thought Sturrock looked excellent yesterday, particularly holding up the ball, but I'm not sure on him and Sills together. Sills has looked out of sorts recently and I wonder whether may be worth starting Sturrock with Benyon, to give us a little more pace. Or even possibly Dsane as a striker instead of on the left - he seems quite effective actually IN the box... I think this plays out in Torquay home and away record this season - away performances alone would have us top, but home performances alone would have us 10th - see www.salisburycity-fc.co.uk/leaguetable.php?team=239&sort=3We have more away games left than home games though, so I hope our current team selection adn style of play can see us through to a play-off spot and hopefully on to Wembley.

'Sprinklergate' certainly gave the impression that something not quite within the spirit of the sport was taking place.
The fact that so much water was applied to the goalmouth that was in the shade and therefore wouldn't dry out rather than to the goalmouth that had the sun beating down on it made the whole thing look very suspicious & we were immediately swapping tales about John Beck's Cambridge Utd where the away teams dressing room would have the heating on full blast in hot weather..and only the home dressing room seemed to have working warm water for the showers.
Beck also let the grass grow longer at the far ends of the pitch so that the countless long balls would hold up a bit more rather than run out of play. That was fine as the pitch is still the same for both sides, however yesterday, by the time the officials insisted that some water be added to the other goal area Bevan was back out on the pitch warming up in readiness for the 2nd half. Consequently the jets of water hit him & forced him to move.
On a slightly similar point I had assumed that announcements over the public address system were ideally made during a stoppage in play or when the ball went out. Yesterday late in the game as a Crawley forward collected a crossfield ball and finding himself clear of defenders had only Bevan to beat. As he advanced on the keeper the Public address came booming in....'The Fourth official has indicated that etc etc'. In the event the lad rounded Bevan but fired into the side netting. It proved to be academic as Crawley hit a second a few minutes later but with the shenanigans of Sprinklergate still fresh in my mind I was willing to chalk it up as probably another Beckism designed to put off the opposition at a crucial moment.
