Oh my god, That goal at Bristol City, I still remember it now, what a header. I was there and the whole big terrace behind the away end went completly mental. We went on to play Sheff Wed in the next round. Another great day out. I could be wrong (and frequently am! ;D) but I think we played Coventry City in the next round and lost 0-2! The Sheffield Wednesday games were the 2-3 home defeat in 1983 and the 1-5 away defeat in 1990 or so! I think you are right there. Caldwell was again on fire at Coventry. Unless my memory is failing me, he gave Killer Kilkline a torrid time and nearly scored early on with a fantastic over head kick. Had that gone in they would still be showing it on the opening credits of Match of the Day! I am sure many fans have stories about Dave Caldwell. I remember going skiing as a 14 year old and on finding out where I was from, the ski rep asked if I'd heard of Caldwell. The rep was a bit of a drinking partner of Dave's and asked us to deliver a note to the great man. He had some great stories about Caldwell's general lifestyle - no doubt slighlty embellished. I won't go into detail other than to say that the opening line in the note read - "How are you Davey boy.....loving all the women in Torquay?" We gave Caldwell the note and he sorted us out with match tickets......which was nice. To a young Torquay fan in the 80s he was great.......he had the mullet, the lifestyle, the attitude and the skill. It is that I have grown up, or do those players still exist in football? To be able to watch players of Caldwell's ability in a Torquay shirt in the modern game there is nearly always a pay off - be it discipline, injury or attitude..............ala Fowler and Loram - not sure what Alex Russell's was though.

Bristol City and Coventry were in the first Cyril season - 1987/88.
Sheffield Wednesday was in the second Cyril season - 1988/89. Just three months after we were there, the Leppings Lane End was the scene of the Hillsborough disaster.

Enzo, Dave C did in fact have his discipline problems, but he was targeted. How many times when the play was going up the the other end did defenders say things to him, of barge him etc, just because they knew he would react.
Refs were always looking to book him or send him off. I remember one game(was it at Yeovil?) where I think he was only on the pitch a matter of minutes before being sent off.
The game is now missing such players, these days, players that were so special, but at least we were able to see and be a part of those times.

Yeovil. We drew up there and the replay was on Sportsnight.
Sutton was the season after (Dave Smith in charge). I've got a feeling that replay was on Sportshight too.

Sportsnight .................. Wednesday evenings, didnt they have a greyhound race each year live on the programme ? Probably. Mostly football or boxing, but they had a bit of everything. Was "Sportsnight with Coleman" for donkeys' years. I think Des Lynham was presenting it at the end.

Google is my friend:
Sportsnight was a midweek BBC television sports programme that ran from 1968 until 1997. It was a successor to Sportsview which started in 1954. Sportsnight was shown on Tuesday nights during the David Coleman era dubbed as Sportsnight with Coleman until it moved to Wednesdays in 1973. Its theme tune was composed by Tony Hatch.
The show broadcast many sports and acted as a midweek version of Grandstand, although most of its coverage was in highlights form. Midweek football action was often shown on Sportsnight, particularly of international matches. A further show, Sport on Friday, ran from 1987 until 1997, acting as a companion to both Sportsnight and Grandstand, covering sports such as snooker and horse racing on BBC2 on a Friday afternoon. The presenter was originally David Icke but replaced by the late Helen Rollason in 1990.
Regular hosts Peter Dimmock (Sportsview, 1954–1964) Frank Bough (Sportsview, 1964–1968) David Coleman (1968–1972) Tony Gubba (1972–1975) Harry Carpenter (1975–1985) Steve Rider (1985–1991) Frank W. Burns (Stand-in, 1991) Desmond Lynam (1991–1997)

Sportsnight .................. Wednesday evenings, didnt they have a greyhound race each year live on the programme ? If we are talking about the local sports program then the answer is yes. It was the Cornish Derby, the biggest greyhound race in the southwest. I was 14 years old and had to walk three greyhounds. Our top dog was called Clancy was favorite to win it. I was walking the dog through Hele a week or so before the big race. Some other dog ran over and took a chunk out of Clancy's leg. We got it stitched up and put him in the race, he trapped first and was way out in front, until the last bend, when his wound opened. My brother who's dog it was has never forgiven me.

However, you sum it up perfectly when you say that defenders "knew he would react" He was his own worst enemy. Tim Sills, who is no angel and sailed too close to the wind at times in my opinion, must have faced similar treatment last year - he was one booking away from a suspension for about 4 months last year. The 1987 / 88 season is one of my favourite campaigns - would be top of the tree had we gone up. For my first year of being old enough to travel with mates to away games there were some real treats. A win at City when we were 1 and 2 in the league with a Jim McNichol header and a great trip to Spurs the following Wednesday. For 70 minutes we were well in that game. The games at Bognor, Bristol and Cov have all been mentioned. I have read that many fans thoroughly enjoyed our away trips last year........a nice country pub, genuine local football fans to chat to. Nice.......we are where we are because we have been an awful excuse of a football club and we have to respect the league we are in. However, I really hope we get back to those days agains soon. Being more expereinced now, I'd just check where Pompey are playing prior to taking in a trip to Bognor!

We beat Bristol City on Sat Dec 5th 1987.
I drove to the game from London having had a cartilage op on the thursday and went to the game on crutches, so I was in the seats while everyone enjoyed themselves on the old open terrace.
We went on to face Coventry away on Jan 9th. It was their first game in defence of the trophy they won in May '87.
Sheffied Wednesday at home was a year after the Coventry match, the reward fror despatching Yeovil after a replay in the 2nd round. I too was one of the 11,000 at Plainmoor vs Wednesday - what a depressing result that was, but a great season, ending in the 1st trip to Wembley.
