Listened to the J.Vine show today on BBC2 radio. It seems Leeds fans are very angry that Kewell has signed for Galatasaray.
While I can understand how they may feel after the tragic death of two Leeds fans a few years ago, should Kewell just be concerned about his playing career.
Many callers to the show made points about how Leeds fans have behaved over the years and felt that they had nothing much to moan about.
I think Kewell needs to do what is best for him, it was after all not the club Galatasaray who were at fault, it was their fans. He could have gone elsewhere, but it seems he will get around 35 grand a week, not bad work if you can get it.

Although the deaths of Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight were tragic I'm not sure how callers to the Radio can really justify Leeds supporter's past exploits as deserving the two deaths. I don't like Leeds at all but at the same time I don't think anyone should lose the I think what really annoyed Leeds Utd at the time was that the Galatasary team didn't wear black armbands and their supporters jeered a message of condolence before the match took place. In tonight's Yorkshire Post Kewell has asked Leeds fans to respect his choice. The full article is here www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/sport/Former-Leeds-United-player-Harry.4263009.jpThe most poignant bit is............ He's quoted as saying "To blame the Galatasaray club for the tragedy in Istanbul is simply wrong and discriminatory. This is a club founded in 1905 that has a proud history of striving for sporting excellence and it should be given the same respect as any other football club.
"For me, sport should first and foremost be about the love of your game. But, equally important, is the respect for not only your team-mates, but all those who you compete against.
"For this reason I have always objected to any form of discrimination in any sport – and football in particular, as that is the sport most near and dear to me."
Still it sounds like he's got a nice juicy contract. Galatasary weren't the only club to be linked with him. Apparently Roma, Spartak Moscow and Portsmouth were all interested in taking punt on a very talented but also injury prone player. £35,000 grand a week and a chance to live in Istanbul. Nice work.

I agree entirely with Harry Kewell's statement. A football club is a football club, employing professionals to do a job. All pro's are transitory and 90% of them give their all for the whole time they are contracted regardless of whether they "supported the club as a boy" as some claim to have done or not. Kewell is a professional footballer and as such is entitled to choose to earn his living wherever he chooses without rancour or abuse from fanatics. By the same score, sickos who reckon two individuals "deserved" to lose the thing most precious to all of us (their lives) are entitled to nothing but disgust and contempt. Perhaps if those that perpetrate such hatred were to placed in a position that they lost someone close to them they might see the futility and ignorance of their stance....................but then there are none so blind as them that cannot (or will not) see!

Yes Chris I was shocked at some of the calls made to the J.Vine show, there was talk about some Millwall game, sure I remember something about it. Leeds fans did have a bad reputation, but I think everyone was shocked when those two fans were stabbed.
I know after that I became anti any Turkish side that played in this country, simply because you some how as football fans unite, when English fans are killed aboard like they were.
Never felt Kewell has ever really delivered what he promised, but good luck to him and I hope it works out for him.

I know after that I became anti any Turkish side that played in this country, simply because you some how as football fans unite, when English fans are killed aboard like they were. My local Turkish shopkeeper is a Galatasary fan along with all of his family.................. I was brought back a souvenir from Istanbul a couple of years ago - a Fenerbache shirt (the person though it ideal as it was blue & yellow stripes) but it soon turned out not to be. I walked into their shop wearing it one Sunday morning and the happy, welcoming family that would forever give my kids sweets or pop some in the top of the shopping for them in their absence adopted stony faces to a person. "What are you doing wearing THAT in here?" they asked, and they meant all the disgust that they showed. My protestations that it was a gift were to no avail and the only way the mood lightened was when they bundled me out the back and threatened to lock me in the cupboard if I did not take it off. Now I also have a black and white Gulls shirt with my name and the number 50 on the back.................and I'm not wearing that in there either and risk them thinking it's Besiktas!
