Apologies if this should be on a different area of the forum but I was browsing through some of the old threads and saw mention of the banner at Burnley that the Blackburn supporters paid to have fly past the ground at half time of our second leg play off game in 1991. Thought it would bring back some memories to see a pic of it from Stuart Clarke's wonderful book 'The Homes of Football'. I remember being in the dark, cavernous away terrace and hoping that this fly over wasn't a bad omen. Luckily it wasn't... Then after we'd got through the game the intimidation as we walked back past the cricket ground to the car... (Ps... Dave, feel free to move this thread to the appropriate place if you think it best)

Great stuff! Wasn't at the game but I do remember how tense it was listening on the radio - but even when Stuart Evans scored the last minute own-goal I felt we'd go through. Strange to think that Burnley are an established Chapionship Club and Blackburn have won the Premiershi£ since then.
I also have bad memories of Tom Kelly's backpass from about 40 yards out that cost us the point that would have meant that the game the following Saturday against Scunny would have been a 'dead rubber' They had a couple of vast terraces before the redevelopment.

BudleighGull, thanks for putting the picture on the forum and it will be just fine where it is(you know we are not to fussy here ;D) What a day it was and I will admit to feeling just a little scared by those not so nice fans. At least we walked away wearing a big grim inside, as it would not have been in our interest to have one on the outside

I had my car kicked by a baying mob that night at the end of the game - just after the huge police presence had been stood down - and then another crowd came chasing us later after we left a pub to get back on the road to London ... Nice people

I had my car kicked by a baying mob that night at the end of the game They wouldn't have been the "more intelligent" rugger types you were extolling the virtues of last week then Alex? I guess they would have been a b raying mob who would have exposed their genitals to all and sundry rather than kick your car and thought it was a huge hoot. Burnley WAS scary though..................my mates and I were offered refuge in a local's (and he was a Burnley fan) house which we accessed from the rear exit from the Chinese takeaway we were in. We scoffed our food, chatted the night away; and only left as dawn was breaking!

We had a beer or two in a pub in Burnley beforehand and the fans in there were great, we bought each other drinks and had some great banter. But they warned us to be careful after the game as they had a hard core who waited around the alley by the cricket pitch and the police tended to be absent! True to form that's what happened, we started to get chased to the car but the overweight slobs tired and gave up after a few yards...

BudleighGull, thanks for putting the picture on the forum and it will be just fine where it is(you know we are not to fussy here ;D) I think this link should be locked, then deleted and the poster band!! Seriously Budliegh - great picture and brings back some happy memories. I still tell this story from time to time because it really was a funny thing to do. I love simon clarke's photography, there is someone who understands what football fans enjoy, rather than the usual dull "action shots"

Having watched Blackburn Rovers on a regular basis when I lived in Lancashire in the 1980s I was well chuffed when the plane and banner appeared overhead.
I missed the trouble afterwards but do remember the SU-SU-SUICIDE chant from the so-called Burnley Suicide Squad as we left the ground and they appeared from square leg on the cricket pitch. I once worked with young people in Blackburn and we often tried in vain to persuade them to join a construction skills programme on the outskirts of Burnley (I wonder why they were so reluctant?). Then there's the two local versions of "No Nay Never" - one about the B*****d Rovers; the other about the Burnley B******s.
Lancashire football was in a bad way when I was there: PNE, Blackpool, Burnley and Bolton all had spells in Div 4; Wigan Athletic were still exactly that (rather than JJB Metrostars or whatever) and Blackburn were pleased to be middling (old) Div 2. As for Accrington and Morecambe, well.....
Where did it all go right?
