Don't worry this is my penultimate posting of programmes of momentus games of long ago. The archives are nearly exhausted. It's old stuff only - the thread, of course, could be expanded to include '88. '98 and and '08 (but it's too painful). Remember it's two points for a win in all cases. 1957 Last game away to Crystal Palace and the table in the programme shows us top. This is the old Div 3S and only one team gets promoted (as Argyle, runners-up six years on the trot, discovered in the 1920s). Torquay draw, Ipswich win and the title goes to Suffolk on goal average. Alf Ramsey was the Ipswich manager. Had Torquay won at Palace would Ramsey's career have stalled? Would England have won the World Cup in 1966? 1967It came as a shock to learn that, even allowing for having played more games, we went into our 45th game of the season in second place (the table should read 26 April). This was a big game at Ayresome - played before 27,000 - resulting in a 4-0 win for Boro' who finished as runners-up (enough to win promotion). United finished 7th. 1968Elm Park Reading, May 1968, my first away trip. The programme table shows us in 4th place - we were top several weeks previously - but we can still get promoted if we win and the results go our way. We lose 4-0 and finish 4th.

To see the teams we were playing them, makes you feel like It was all in another lifetime. Look at who we play these days, one more reason why we need all the support we can get, so as to start the climb back up to where we belong.

Whilst Palace Away is not even a memory for me (I was not even five years old then) I was at Ayresome, and at one time still had a picture that was featured in the local evening paper up there of myself and Mervo fast asleep on the pavement outside the turnstiles in the morning sunshine. You see, for the second successive year we had embarked on a twelve hour journey to the North East for a promotion decider (the earlier one being successful at neighbouring Darlington in 66) it took FOUR hours merely to get past Bristol in those days and the nearest bit of the motorway system to South Devon began at Tewksbury with the M5 which only ran as far as Strensham and then one had to negotiate Kidderminster and Wolverhampton (and a sighting of the famous Molyneux)Grounds) town centres before picking up the M6 in Staffordshire. We rumbled through Manchester, Oldham, Huddersfield and Leeds (breakfast!) en route to the Great North Road (A1) what an adventure commencing at 8.30pm on a Friday night in NA and not getting back until 8am Sunday morning......................all for 12/6. About sixty two and a half pence! Crowd segregation was unknown in those days, and we stood on the Holgate Kop surrounded by guys in red pitmen's helmets and British Steel hard hats ................"why do you wear such headgear?" we asked 'you'll find out if you score' came the reply. We didn't, and so the ones who swung like apes in the rafters above us never did "drop in", in fact the game was over before it had begun - I seem to recall they scored twice in the first ten minutes and I had never heard such a roar from a football crowd in my life. An abiding memory is of Merv and I getting a conducted tour of the dressing rooms and the gymnasium in the roof void of the grandstand of this World Cup venue from Harold Shepherdson- the England physio and assistant manager of 'Boro. Oh, and that game at Reading? Merv and I used to"collect"corner flags if we could get on the pitch and nick'em.................and a pair from Elm Park were in the collection................in fact I remember being chased down the street by an irate steward and getting in a tug of war over the pole. Merely the pennant was the rule after that!

I notice Dermot Curtis playing for us in the Middlesboro match - I think I'm right in saying he sadly passed away last week. Has any mention been made of that ?

OK Dave, will do ! p.s. thanks for the YouTube tip - I've been telling everyone who can't get away from me how our first goal was as good as anything anywhere, right out of the top drawer of counter-attacking football at its best ! Now they can check it for themselves

Yes a goal worthy of winning the match on its own, shame we let one in, but great to see Ellis get our winner.
