Promotion to League 1. Relegation to Non-League. Match of the Day against Yeovil.
There have always been something going on with Torquay United, never a dull moment, peoplewanting to have a go at another person, someone dosent like the manager someone else dose. Someone thinks a players rubbish while someone else thinks that that player is Legend.
I have very memories of going Torquay United when I was a kid and oy were they exciting times, my first tour of Plainmoor with my Primary school, meeting players, coaching staff and watching a match, I thought it was the best day I ever had.
There were days when watching Torquay were painful; the year we got relegated was the same year we set the record for most games without a win, BUT there were times when it was like nothing you ever seen, the scenes at Southend when we won Promotion to League 1. When we beat Hull at thier brand new stadium, the KC Stadium in front of 20,000 people.
Never will I forget those memories, I remember when I was living in Manchester for 4 years I would always sit and the tv trying to find out what happened with Torquay United. Those 4 years I would beg my mum and dad to take me to Torquay United.
Mr. Bateson was in charge then and he wasnt the best chairman, shutting down the Youth Scheme, losing players, selling players, not investing in playersm not giving the many managers he has employed much money. There was the time when he didnt come to Torquay United for a whole season and when we won promotion to League 1, Mr. Bateson was on a Cruise ship.
Mr. Bateson was however a Torquay fan, he wanted the best for Torquay United, if it was possible he wanted Torquay United at the very top, he never wanted Torquay relegated to the Blue Sqaure Premier. He stepped back into the club when we were down and almost out for the ten count when Chris Roberts had done his nasty work, he could have just sit back in his armchair and enjoy his retirement but he made a mistake selling to Roberts and a big one at that and for whats its worth he did whatsnright and taken back the club and did its best to pull us clear of relegation.
Now however we have Mr. Alex Rowe, Mr. T & m Boyce, My Carter, Mr. O`Dwyer, My. Hayman, Mr. Baker, Mr. Bristow & Mr. Coote who are all Torquay fans they were the club on thier sleeves as if it was their heart. One and a half years in charge of the club and already have written history for us: Making the F.A. Trophy Fianl at Wembley and not many non-league teams can boost playing in front of a hugwe crowd like we did; we played on Match of the Day in the F.A. Cup when we thumped League 1 Yeovil at home; we have had sell-out crowds agaisnt Exeter City, we made the play off semi-finals last season when before the season started we had four, yes, fouyr players on our books, one of those players, Lee Thorpe left on a free transfer to Rochdale leaving us with 3, they appointed Oaul Buckle from Exeter City and he taken us this far, put up with stick from fans pretty much form the end of last season. Every week he praised the fans for thier support, apart from a few weeks ago.
There have been a few mistakes which the club have made, for instance putting up prices for the Yeovil game by £2 in the F.A. Cup. Putting up prices at the start of this season when not many peope can afford to do much leisure. The way they taken over Boots `N Laces giving Steve, who used to run Boots a bad deal and screwing him in Leymans terms.
They have however tryed to communicate with fans asking people how they can improve the club and the ground. They have invested heavily in the club, hiring a groundsman and an assitant, a stadium manager, a good manager, assitant, a brilliant Physio and of course the players, these types of players like Tim Sills, Nicholson, Poke (From Southampton) etc they dont come cheaply. We have a squad which many managers in LEAGUE 2 would dream of and that is saying something.
There is a saying: Players come and go, but fans stay eternal..... and I can say that we have been promoted, relegated twice in three years and relegated to non-league, dragged in the mud by Roberts and yet we still managed to get 15,000 people to Wembley, an average of 3,500 people at home last season and sell outs last season. We are fighitng for promotion, the last game of the season could be a sell-out and I think that that saying can be used here. There were fans who were gutted, gelt pain having been relegated to non-league yet we return, yet we kept the faith, yet we are giving our support.
Antoher saying:You can take the boy out of Torquay, but you cant take Torquay out of the boy....... and that can be said for most of our fans. Living ourside of Torbay due to work, families etc and yet they still travel the length and bredth of the country to support the team they love, Paul Bastard for instance must travel the furthest of all fans to games and yet he still dose it.
This is the time we waited for, for Torquay to wake up and fight for promotion, wkae up and become big, look up instead of over thier shoulders. Hope, dream and chase instead of just hoping and dreaming.
