Was just thinking about some of my funny times in the PA with Pete Wiley and thought i'd share a few with you...
When Pete Wiley & Myself were looking for some cover in the PA Room and a guy called Charlie Blewitt (perfect name) auditioned. he read out the half time score of the Torquay Game.....At Torquay!!!
Me having to read out..."would the owner of car reg d........., please quickly make your way to Daison Crescent, you car is on fire"
Trying to do the show with the roof blown off after the Hurricane
Leaving the mic turned on one more than one occasion and me saying what i thought of the ref!!!!
The first time we used to roving mic and i took it over to the popside and asked someone what they thought of Duane Darby being left out..and the person said some very harsh things...made it into the paper and we never did it again lol..
Pete Wiley trying to read out the whole Red Star Belgrade team and did it in a legendary way, thankfully i didnt do that show as we would have still been there...

I like the story from Bristol Rovers (and I got it from the horses mouth at the CHAOS Cup) of the guy controlling the videotronboard when Rovers conceded a late late goal that was to cost them a play off semi......................instead of the usual dancing images and the word G O A L ! he typed in B O L L O C K S - and promptly got sacked!

...another quite touching memory.
Most of you know that we do Commentaries of the blind and partially sighted. When ever Pete did the show i would do the blind comms...so Derek Brad could do alternate games. (This man has been ther eabout 40 years). Anyway normally we would be in the extended Pa box and the blind/partial sighters would listen via the headphones.
On the occasion fo the Play Off Semi Final v Scarborough when we thrashed them first leg and we got two early goals with Rodney Jack scoring both i think... on this night the headphones were not working so i sat amongst them (we also tended to do this if there was only one. On this occasion there were about 12)
You all remember the celebrations through the match with the Mexican Wave etc seeing as we were so far ahead on aggregate. I wanted these people to join in these celebrations as alll the stadium was up when the wave came round. So i got all linked in arms and made sure they were all safe and then for about 10 mins, still commentating, i would say "ok here we go and.....nnnnnnnnnnnoooooooow" and up we all went and i tell you it was so amazing and emotional. Some of them were smiling ear to ear with tears in their eyes. It bought a tear to my eyes. To think about it, that 10 min period i didnt actually commentate it was just full of here we go and wahhhhayyyyyyyyyyys from all 13 of us...
I think this is why my Gullsworld bbcgull coms were so enjoyed in yahoo etc because of my grounding doing this. It really is a humbling experience to 'view' the game in a way and put it into words when the people can already here the crowd reactions. It is so different form a normal commsdown a radio etc.
That was the only time i saw us 'get' to Wembley and be able to celebrate at the match. But do you know what, just ONE SECOND of the pleasure on those peoples faces in that moment in time is worth ANTHING i ever did during my 15 years at Plainmoor.

I seem to remember something that happened a few years back at an international. Israel were playing somebody and they played the German anthem instead of the Israeli by mistake???

I remember an announcement from a young announcer at Exeter when we played up there a few years ago. He said that smoking in the grandstand was prohibited but it was ok in the back passage

Hadn't heard the one about the videotronboard at Bristol Rovers but, back in their Twerton days - or "Trumpton" as City fans loved to call it - the Gas had a wonderful character as stadium announcer.
He might have lacked finesse - and it's quite possible he knew nothing about football - but he added plenty to the mix that makes Rovers such an enjoyable club to visit.
Gems included merry quips to the referee as he left the pitch - "bit early for the pantomine season isn't it, ref?" - and hilarious attempts to read the half time scores: "m-m-m-Mangotsfield, no, m-m-m-Macclesfield, you know who I bloody mean, two..."
Apparently, after several reprieves, he finally got the push after an unfortunate substitution announcement involving the name of Junior Bent. I last heard him on a Radio Bristol Geoff Twentyman phone-in when he claimed to be calling from his cell at Her Majesty's pleasure somewhere in Dorset.

Here is an old pic from around 2002 in the PA Room. For those who know you have the 'little box' that we do the Announcing from and the side one much more spacious!!! This part was first built as the old Police Box but believe me with Derek Brad, Pete Wiley and bbcgull in the little box and a dozen please in the police box it didnt work. We then aquired the Police Box where Derek and I (on days i wasnt doing the PA) did the Commentaries for the blind (before my Gullsworld Comm days). you can see Derek and I on the Seaside And Soccer documentary film. Here i am with state of the art technology pointing at where the blind and partially sighted sit. Many a time we would ask them to move to be within the signal area. I think some are still sat on Babbacombe Downs!!!! The Loyal flask to hand and in the pic is Helen Randall (was that her name? - the 50/50 girl and thespian. V attractive) In the background s the PA main bit and past the window is the Press Box. Many a time we would communicate between both with various, "Who scored?" questions? etc. We also had an attendence prediction game between PA and Press room. 20p got you in.. i know big money and Dave Thomas or myself always used to win. Nothoing changes huh? thought i'd share the pic! The pic was taken by the photographer Marcus....forgot his surname. if anyone remembers his dispaly of pics around Plainmoor.

Great picture Brett and I know you really loved you time doing that job at Plainmoor, still hopeful we may get to hear a recording, just to confirm what we already know, that you were a top man In that box.

I don't think anything exists anymore Dave. The only things recorded were a full match comm from the GullsWorld, which i sent to Richard Green at Radio Devon and he offered my the co comm job for a Torquay game in the Leyland Daf or whatever it was called by then. (i'm sureour very own bartondowns will inform us of the origin of this trophy dating back to 83 and the Group Cup) Sadly on that night the PA Room was short staffed which rarely happens. And i had to cover the PA..loyalty you see lol... Never got another chance!!! Mervo did hold this recording. Another recording is of my pre match 'Torquay United's Guru' (Gemini's name for me, not my choice!!!) news and views on the Adrian Peach Show in the Morning and the Afternoon Show as well. Also my live post match reports from Plainmoor. - now that was nerve racking. Only one chance!!!!! I have a copy of this on tape in an attic somewhere. Shame, in this day and age i would recorded most things. Off topic the PL will be late in going up this week as i was doing it earlier but then the server crashed.
