If you were to come and tell me that some cow had just jumped over the moon, you really would need to prove it. I’m not the sort of person who is happy to believe everything anyone wants to tell me.
First I would be asking who is the one telling my the story, do they have a track record of telling porkies, and then is what they are telling me creditable? Could I believe such a thing could happen?
Reading the post made by Bev (lights in the sky) got me thinking about spacemen and then I moved onto ghosts, well its one thing I have first hand experience on.
I gave up watching those ghosts hunt programmes on TV, I never once saw a ghost on any of them, or anything that even came close. Sure someone felt the room go cold, or heard a noise, but I never heard anyone dragging some chains over some wooden floorboards.
I was once told a story by a family member, my brother in law who some know on here, he was the front man for a band in the 60’s they were called Shadrack and the Vampires.
I was only young when he told me the story but my sister backed him up and I had no reason not to believe him. He had gone to stay on a local farm; the night chosen was the anniversary of a tragic event that took place there some 10 years before.
The farmhouse was new and built some 50 yards from the site of the old farmhouse. That one had burned to the ground about ten years before and a young girl was trapped in the house and died screaming at her bedroom window.
He told me that on the same hour of the day the fire had happened, a scream of a girl was heard very loudly coming from the site of the old farmhouse.
I never believed in ghosts but that story was one I thought could be true and then I saw my one and only ghost for real and It scared me half to death.
I have traced my family in Newton Abbot back many generations, some lived in Ogwell and some in Denbury, but most lived in the Courts that were once a big part of East Street.
I have also traced one part of my family who lived in Queen Street, the part just near the Queens hotel. The cottages across the road from the Queens hotel were built I believe for the railway workers, at that time Newton Station was very important and had large sheds that carried out all the repairs to trains.
My story is about the houses on the same side as the Queens, most have been shops for years, long before I was born, but they were once all just homes. Before I go on, the owner of the Queens fish and chip shop (shop long since gone) lived next door to his shop in one of the old railway cottages. He always claimed that there was ghost in that very cottage.
The ghost never harmed anyone, but spent all its time putting the shoes tidy in the house, very strange but he swore it was true.
Now I was the manager of a hire shop just up from the Queens hotel (Milber Hire) downstairs it was just laid out as a hire shop, but upstairs was much as it once was. All the rooms just the same, only now having different uses.
Then one day it happened, I said good night to the staff as I locked the shop front door, only one more thing to do and that was go up stairs and flick a switch that would somehow connect the alarms to the police station.
I came across the landing was just about to walk back down the stairs and there she was. A small old lady, all dressed in black and clothes I have seen in history books. She was just stood at the very bottom of the stairs and had a big smile on her face.
I was gone, back across that landing and into one of the rooms and shut the door tight, while I looked for something to wedge behind it. I waited but heard no noises and after about 20 minutes I went slowly back to the top of the stairs.
There was no one there and I was down those stairs and out of the shop as fast as I was able to do so, she was real and not in my mind, was she someone from my family? It could well be possible, so tell me, have you seen a ghost?
