Sometimes words are said to you that just seem to stick in your head, it happened to me when Sean made a statement to me in reference to Paul Buckle.
He said He’ll be damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.
I would have had such a perfect working day today, well I should have anyway, yet I came home feeling I had failed. It started well as usual, Carol woke me up at 4.45am and I got washed and dressed and made my way downstairs to the front room. There waiting for me was my life saver cup of Nescafe and I could hear Carol in the kitchen preparing my flask and packed lunch.
I got out Evo from the garage and as I love driving her the smile was still on my face, I then got to the Kingskerswell roundabout, get her up to 40mph and stick on the cruise control. No I don’t need to do it, but its fun being able to drive all the way to Penn Inn just having to steer, I know I won’t be using the cruise control coming home.
Loaded my van and the last think to do is check the forum; I find tufc01’s match report and drive off smiling even more. The 370 mile round trip is not bothering me, I love driving and the sun is out and I’m going to Weymouth and later Weston Super Mare, what job could be better I ask myself.
Had a great time winding Tom up in Yeovil, well those young farmers had a do up at Weston over the weekend and caused all sorts of trouble, you see Tom I said, how can you moan about how football fans behave. Yes it really was a nice day; Dave cracking the jokes as he always does, cuddling the few old ladies who somehow now think its part of me calling into see them.
Only one set of temporary traffic lights all day, still a few to many middle lanners on the M5 but that’s something that’s never going to change. The real problem was me who is in my own words the hunter gatherer, failed to bring in hardly any work for those back in the Toolfix camp, not sure I even covered the whole tank of fuel I used.
I could blame those customers of mine; claim it’s their fault as they had not taken in any tools for repair. I’m sure they would then blame their customers for not breaking them and bringing them in for repair. You can bet those tradesmen would then blame some bankers in the USA, as they have screwed things up so badly that the tradesmen can’t find any work and therefore have no chance to break the said tools.
Everyone passing the buck, but that is where it is so different for Buckle; he has no one he can really pass it too. Yes he can blame some poor playing surface, blame the crap ref, or even say the players did not do what he asked them to do, but fans will still point their fingers at Bucks.
Did he rest Mansell? Well let’s say he did and we lost the game, Bucks fault for not playing him in the side. But say Mansell breaks down in the play-off semi final, fans will be screaming that Mansell has been played far to many games, why was he not given a rest, we have a big enough squad to rest players and keep the team fresh.
Bucks takes a player off and then we concede a goal, what a crap substitution people shout out, bring on Carlisle with ten to go and he scores, then Bucks is seen as a genius and we all love him and think he’s the best manager ever, that is until we lose the next game and then who else can we blame but Bucks.
I did everything right to day, I could not do anymore, other than knock some new machines on display in some tool shop on the floor in the hope they broke and I could take them back to the boys to fix. Yet I failed in my job to do what was required, if it’s that bad doing a job like mine, just how must it be for a football manager.
I will tell you this, no matter how bad I felt coming home, I would never want to swap my job for Buckles, but like him I may be a hero tomorrow in my boss’s eye that is if I come back with a van full.
