Life can be amazing at times and when something’s happen you end up wondering if it was somehow meant to happen, that somehow it had all been planned and mapped out long before it may have even been thought of by those involved in it.
You take the 4th of April, one group of members on a football forum had made plans to have a matchday carvery at their football club, while at the same time and completely unknown to them, a father was making arrangements so his son who has leukaemia could have a special day as the team mascot. Two separate events not really connected in any way, but end up being a big part of both sets of plans.
Some might say it was fate, that it was meant to happen, but I have never really liked the word fate and only because so often it only gets used when some tragedy has happened, or some sad event. I also am not too happy with the words “it was meant to happen” because it makes me feel that someone or something has somehow arranged it to happen.
That’s why when I read about some event, be it a major flood or some other disaster, I try and look for the real reasons it has happened and what I generally find, it was a combination of a group of events that all came together at the same time. Each one needed the other for the disaster to happen, remove just one of the elements and nothing very bad would have happened.
A simple example would be a flood on a tidal river, very heavy rain and a exceptional high tide and the wind changing direction at the wrong time, the end result was a flood, but if it had not rained, or the tide was a normal one the flood would not have occurred.
Mind you it’s not always that simple really, there could be another element to it, one that may have happened even days or weeks before, but came into play on the day. Newton Abbot was badly flooded on the 27th January 1979, I know as my house at Bakers Park was filled inside with water that was five foot deep. The tide did not turn when expected on the river Teign and as the river Lemon goes under the town through a covert, it just kept backing up and in the end could not flow through the covert fast enough.
Just think if a cow had died in Bradley Meadow the day before the flood, was lying on the river bank and then got washed down to the covert by the flood water, it then gets stuck under the covert and backs the river up even more and makes the flood so much worse. That did not happen but I was trying to show that an event on a different day can come into play in another unconnected event on a different day.
So are things all meant to happen? Or do we really have control and therefore create our own destiny, I do believe we can effect events in others peoples life’s by our actions, but other events will happen not matter what we do. Has this ever happened to you? Let’s say you are coming up to Penn Inn Roundabout and can’t make up your mind to go the main Road to Torquay, or the back road. In the end you go the main road, get to near Aller and the car that is four in front of you crashes.
The question you may ask yourself is this; if I had gone the back road instead would have the crash still have happened? When this happened to me I found myself thinking all the way back to when I got in my car at work to come home. Did any of the cars over take me, did I do anything to effect where their car was on the road at the time of the crash. Well the answer I came up with was no, it could have a different answer if I had let out on to the main road the crashed car, from a side road further back, I would have by my action placed that car at the point the crash happened.
On the 4th of April two elements will come together and the end result will be a very special day that all those who are a part of it will remember with fondness. Yet there has been so many other events that have happened and some were a few years ago, that have played a major part in making the 4th April even happen in the first place.
One was mervo giving up his forum and handing it over to a young man, we all know how that turned out, but If mervo had not done that, then there would have been no need to create the Torquay Fans Forum and even if I had started it up, it would not have been the success that it is.
Then we have Sean becoming the main sponsor of our club, joining our forum and running his matchday sponsor competition on here, if that had not happened, we would not have ended up being let down and Andygull would not have come up with the ideas of the carvery as a way of still making the Kettering match a special day.
For Grahame and Lewis there are two main events that have happened that are the reasons they will be with us on the 4th of April, one sadly is Lewis getting diagnosed with leukaemia and the other is our Chris Todd also getting leukaemia, those events has led to Grahame wanting Lewis to have a day he will always remember, one that says we are getting on with our lives, if only there was a magic wand that we could use to wipe away what has happened to Lewis and Chris, but we can’t no matter how much we want too.
What we can do is share a day with this special young man and play our part in making that day so special for him, he has come along a path that has led us all together, was it fate? Was it meant to happen? I really don’t know but I’m so looking forward to shaking his hand and saying hello to him and sharing in his day, because I know this young man will humble me and fill me with so much joy all at the same time.
