I grew up as an avid Derby fan......they once came a close second to the gulls! Did you have any family up that way? My mum came from Denby (where the pottery comes from) and we used to visit relatives there in the 1970s. I watched my first Divsion 1 game at the Baseball Ground in 1972, when Sheffield United's goalie saved two Alan Hinton penalties. No family from up there mate....afraid i descend from a long line of fruit + veg barrow boys from the east end . Been to the baseball ground several times though......First time in about '76 i reckon, still remember the ploughed field and red hot atmosphere there. Pride Park is an impressive stadium.....but still a souless concrete ground compared to the BG.

I guess that the annoucement of the Derby County game today means that the very attractive idea of a pre-season tour of Scotland won't be happening for another year. I would love to see a few grounds in Scotland sometime. It would've been a nice excuse to visit them while watching us! I had a few in mind as well. Aberdeen, Greenock Morton (Cappielow Park looks like a throwback to the old days), Brechin City (Glebe Park, the only ground in Europe surrounded by a hedge!), Arbroath, and maybe Queen of the South which boasts the biggest terrace left in Scottish football! Cappielow is brilliant. I was there for the 3rd division promotion decider against Peterhead in 2003 and the atmosphere was terrific. There's a real Clydeside feel about the place with ship yard cranes and Stalinist blocks of flats. I watched my first Divsion 1 game at the Baseball Ground in 1972, when Sheffield United's goalie saved two Alan Hinton penalties. I've been lucky enough to see some great games over the years and to be caught up in a number of really special occasions. I'm totally indifferent to the Champions League these days but loved the old two-leg ties. I'm sorry to brag but I was hugely fortunate to be at Derby v Real Madrid in 1975, Liverpool v St Etienne in 1977 and Everton v Bayern Munich in 1985. That night at the Baseball - when Charlie George scored three and Real were beaten 4-1 - was fantastic and a reminder of the old ground's unique atmosphere. An odd shambles of a place - which didn't quite fit together - but a real football ground with proper supporters. Just a shame Derby lost the second leg 5-1! You would never have used the term "stadium" in conjunction with the Baseball. Totally different to Pride Park where I've been just the once for a game at the other end of the spectrum: Derby 1 Bristol Rovers 3 when the Gas were virtually propping up the four divisions.

I saw a programme about the late ground keeper who was much maligned for the state of the pitch. He came clean and told how it was Clough who insisted on the pitch being like that to help his team.
It nearly backfired one day for a European game. He used to turn on the hoses to soak the pitch before kick off and then heavily sand it. unfortunately, it then began to rain heavily and the match was nearly abandoned.

Derby v Real Madrid in 1975......................... That night at the Baseball - when Charlie George scored three and Real were beaten 4-1 - was fantastic I regularly see Charlie......................shopping in Morrisons with his mum and in Paddy Powers occasionally. He doesn't look any different save for the hair being a bit shorter and slightly receded. A bit thick round the waste (but aren't we all at our age?) and whilst queuing behind him, I still half expect him to throw himself on the ground in that "Wembley Celebration" way of his when he gets a "Two for the Price of One" at the till! ;D

It also looks like we have a pre season friendly on Thursday 9th July.
Vs Buckland Atheletic at Homers Lane.
Nice ground which should be able to accomodate a nice crowd.

They have all been announced on dot.com now
Home to Plymouth, Derby, Bristol Rovers and Brighton. Away to Buckland
Nothing too glittering but I didn't honestly see the point from us playing that Chelsea XI last season - the Rovers game was far more entertaining as a spectacle for example.
Uncle Merse will be happy.

Hey Folks. A friendly with our Nigel's Derby County ay?(Or is that Brewers County?) We play them twice before the season begins. One game is for a charity cup called the Bass Charity vase. It used to be a big competition involving many top clubs but sadly it has been reduced to just a few local clubs, in fact I think it's just us and the Rams this year. I'm sure, as Derby County is full of ex-Burton Albion folk, you should beat them quite comfortably. WE will.!
