www.torquayunited.com/page/PreSeason/0,,10445~1594572,00.html Colin Lee has confirmed that Derby County will be the first team to play at Plainmoor in Pre-Season on Thursday 23rd July with a 7:45pm kick-off. A good match I find. I think seeing as Nigel Clough is manager that may helped us get the game on.

Is that really true Jon? I can remember us playing the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham in cup matches or friendlies but I've never known us play Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton or Newcastle? I guess there can't be many clubs in the league who have played the other 91 league clubs at least once!

We played Newcastle in the FA Cup and in a friendly in 1979. We played Everton in a Testimonial in 1978. We hammered Liverpool 7-2 in a friendly in 1935. Our reserves played Arsenal Reserves in the Southern League in 1938/39. We sort of played Arsenal's first team in a Testimonial in 1966 - but "our" team was a select XI with several Argyle players.

I didn't know about the those games. The Arsenal one seems a bit on the flakey side though! I guess Liverpool weren't a particulary good side back then or maybe their manager was also had a dubious squad rotation policy.
I guess that playing that the likes of Southport, Scarborough, Bradford Park Avenue and the original Wimbledon (plus Merthyr Town?) offset us not playing Dagenham and Redbridge or Morecambe.
Just for the record, when did we last play Ipswich Town?

Never knew that Jon. How long have we been waiting to complete the set with Derby? They were in Div 3N in the mid 1950s as the most southerly club and - in other years - could have crept into Div 3S (Port Vale, Mansfield and the Nottingham clubs managed it). Newcastle away in the FA Cup was a disappointment. I was going on the Saturday when it was postponed and I think it was eventually played at the third or fourth time of asking.

I grew up as an avid Derby fan......they once came a close second to the gulls! My grandfather told me when i was very young, that he played for them, in reality it was only actually during the war, he was good friends with some of the Derby Legends that won the fa cup (for the only time) in '46.....Raich Carter, Peter Docherty, Jackie Stamps etc - he was their PT instructor in the RAF. Ted Dickinson (RIP) from Torquay Cricket club played for them too in the 30's and he used to tell me all about those times, i've still got his team photo from 1932 somewhere. It always used to petrify me, who i would support if we drew them in the cup......guess i probably knew it would be the gulls.

I guess that the annoucement of the Derby County game today means that the very attractive idea of a pre-season tour of Scotland won't be happening for another year.
I would love to see a few grounds in Scotland sometime. It would've been a nice excuse to visit them while watching us!
I had a few in mind as well.
Aberdeen, Greenock Morton (Cappielow Park looks like a throwback to the old days), Brechin City (Glebe Park, the only ground in Europe surrounded by a hedge!), Arbroath, and maybe Queen of the South which boasts the biggest terrace left in Scottish football!
I wonder who has the biggest Terrace in the football league? Cardiff perhaps? Wrexham's is decommissioned now. It's very sad that stadiums are now becoming devoid of standing areas, even though there are some top notch modern stadiums in Germany with terracing.

I'll stick with the Southern League games or we'll get Merse's story about Merv Benney's story about the 1966 game. Liverpool finished 7th in the First Division that year - so must have been a decent side, but no match for the mighty TUFC. Squad rotation was illegal and punishable by the death penalty in those days. As for Dagenham and Morecambe, I'm crossing my fingers that we'll meet up with them next season.

Never knew that Jon. How long have we been waiting to complete the set with Derby? Since we met Sunderland in a pre-season friendly in 2001.

My mum came from Denby (where the pottery comes from) and we used to visit relatives there in the 1970s. I watched my first Divsion 1 game at the Baseball Ground in 1972, when Sheffield United's goalie saved two Alan Hinton penalties.

Last time in the League was the 1956/57 season when, of course. they pipped us to promotion on goal average.

I was living in Paris back in 1997 which is why my memory is slightly hazy!
