I tried reading "The Miracle of Castel di Sangro" but I didn't like the way the author read, being an American. I didn't think that it read particulary well when compared to the Tim Park's book. Mainly I guess because that Mr Parks was commenting on it whilst being fully involved in the story or having a big attachment to it. I didn't get the impression that Joe McGinniss, the writer of the other book, actually understood or had an appreciation of everything going on.
I read the Eammon Dunphy book a long time ago and it was the first autobiography I read that made me aware of the negativity that can happen when a team isn't doing so well. A weak manager, a divided bunch of senior pros and a bunch of cocky young kids treating some senior pros like shit. A bit different to the bonhomie of my first football autography, the wonderful "Crazy Horse" by Emlyn Hughes!
Before I read The Damned United a couple of years ago I read both the offcial Brian Clough Autobiography and for my money it's a much better read "With Clough, by Taylor" by Peter Taylor. You can tell David Peace spent time reading both of those but probably leaned more towards the Peter Taylor viewpoints especially in the flashback sequences.
