Roy Mac's team?? Wasn't it Colin Lee's team as he brought 23 goal David Graham to the club and without his goals we would have been no where.
in reality it was part CL, part RM and part Leroy (Craig Taylor) that got us promoted but the biggest part was Leroy getting those players to play in a style that Roy Mac (a defender by nature) could never do

I think thats pretty bang on Stuart. But as Leroy found, getting players in to replace the departing ones was as difficult as Roy Mac found getting his side to play to the strengths of his better players. Alex Russell would've never ever played a minute for us if it wasn't for Roy Mac. Without that signing would Leroy had been so successful? Remember that this happens at the highest level. Bruce Rioch signed Dennis Bergkamp for Arsenal, not Arsene Wenger.

...a draw up there and a win on the last day + 3 more wins than them and its in the bag Its still a long way off i know, it does however seem far more achievable than it did a couple of weeks ago when we were 21 points behind them albeit with a couple of games in hand. The gap is shortening and the pressure is increasing ever so slightly. What a last game that would be, if it was still on, going in to that game..... Shivers down the spine job....

After Burton having their previous match at Ebbsfleet postponed late on due to snow and losing 1 - 0 at the time; I would say that is justice In fact, having an extra away game probably helps our cause - wouldn't want them feeling too sprightly for Saturday The season does seem to be potentially building to an exciting finale and I posted several weeks ago that if we could get within 10 points of Burton by the end of March then we would have an outside chance of overhauling them. Looking at the other play off positions, we gained four points against Histon ( and that was only by them scoring an injury time goal at their place! - a result very unfairly criticised at the time ), four points against Cambridge (Yes, that was due to us scoring an injury time winner and a comprehensive win against Stevenage (I will certainly be cheering them on against Ebbsfleet in the trophy as that is a distraction that we could do with them having ;D) Of the above teams, Cambridge seem to be the ones most in form at present and if we cannot overhaul Burton then it may be in our interests for them to! It is a Marathon and not a sprint and if we cross the finishing line first in injury time against Burton at Plainmoor then I will be even more ecstatic than if we had romped to the title by 20 points showing good linear progression on the frequently produced graphs here.

Any one read todays Herald? Dave Thomas would appear to have been reading our boards yesterday, Todd and Brough, Burton, away form and home form reversal. It`s all a bit coincidental if you ask me, smacks of lazy journalism or is his thinking the same as a few of ours all rolled into one? Hi Mr. Thomas you`ve been rumbled!

I'm a right one for graphs and stats, but agree, nothing can actually tell us what will happen tomorrow. We can see forcasts and permutations but what matters is having two minutes of injury time played and Wayne Carlisle pops up with an extra two points for us. No one can predict that! I have a scrap book, actually one of my own that I did and which I must post on here one day, in which I pasted newspaper reports and results of every game through out the season of 1979/80 (if I recall) when I was a mere teenager. Just after Christmas of that season I went to the back of the book and on the two empty pages started working out how we had done so far against all the other teams in the top third, middle third and bottom third and our likely results to come based on this form. I then worked out all their games to come and their likely results. I did this for us playing really well, having a blip or losing form. It was all written down in a methodical and painstaking way. I worked out permutations & produced graphs to show how we would progress game-by-game for the second half of the season. I knew I was right, promotion was in the bag! At the final analysis we were looking to finish as runners up or, at worst, in third place. I then changed the figures each week as the results came along and with two weeks to go I now notice it all went quiet excepting the large red felt tip pen run through it all and the word b*****cks! We finished somewhere near ninth (again! Didn't we always? Four times in seven seasons from 75/76 until 83/84) So whatever we predict, it's irrelevant!! Years and years of forecasting our promotions have taught me that....

I knew I was right, promotion was in the bag! .............. it all went quiet excepting the large red felt tip pen run through it all and the word b*****cks! Budleigh, you have successfully summed up my first ten years of supporting TUFC. Finally the penny dropped and I decided to get out the metaphorical large red felt tip pen and write b*****cks at the start of every August. That change of approach has given me greater peace of mind and the prediction has ended up spot on with two exceptions which were all the sweeter for being unexpected. I think last season I forgot the metaphorical large red felt tip pen and I paid the price with the biggest kick in the b*****cks I've ever had from football.

I think the main problem (if that's the correct word) is the size of their squad is too small - when their two defenders were absent we sliced through them like a hot knife through butter.

That's what i meant Dave. He assembled a quality team, but never got it to perform in a manner that would have achieved promotion. He still gets attributed some of the credit which ought to have been saved for Leroy. Roy Mac was a glorified scout! ;D As Roy Mc assembled a large proprtion of the team, it is only right that he is given a degree of credit for what that team went on to achieve. If nothing else the mere recruitment of Alex Russell should be held as the some of the best bit of business the club has done. Was it Roy or Leroy who signed who signed Fowler? Another fantastic purchase - up there with selling Matt Gregg for 400 grand! I can understand what you are saying though. I always thought that, should finances allow, a dream team of Roy Mc as Director of Football / recruitment and Leroy as coach would have been an interesting combo. Leroy's main problem was that beyond the brave signing of Akinfenwa he became pretty clueless brigning players in. That said, I don't know what constraints he was working under. We'll never know how he would have fared had he been given the support that PB has enjoyed over the last two seasons. On a tight budget Leroy got us to within a point of League one survival in a league with Hull, Oldham, Bristol City, Sheff Wed, Bradford, Barnsley and clubs whose resources dwarfed that of our own. In my opinion, survival would have been a far greater achievement than getting out of this league will ever be. Alas it never happened and Leroy will be remembered more for the performance at Colchester and the subsequent awful season. As an aside, occasionally I read on these boards how some people are really enjoying our time in the BSP - I think Budligh mentioned something a while ago (sorry, if I am wrong) I'll always enjoy watching Torquay whatever league we are in, but despite being totally outclassed and gubbed every now and again and ultimately being relagated with a gutless display, that season in League 1 ranks as one of my favourite years of supporting the Gulls. Watching us compete and get results at places like Boundary Park, Hillsborough, Valley Parade and Ashton Gate whilst hovering around the relegation zone was far more satisfying than beating the likes of Garys and hovering around the Play Offs.

Yeah, well and truely rumbled. Heaven forbid!, how dare the TUFC correspondent report on such topical issues via his weekly coloumn?? Have you noticed how he always puts a match report in the Herald the day after a TUFC game? That's exactly what fans do on here! How weird is that? Maybe he does not even go to the games eh..................and on a Friday he even has the cheek to preview Saturday's game - again thats exactly what happens on here! Scandelous! How on earth did he cope before the era of message boards?

I HAD A DREAM. Many weeks ago when Burton were miles ahead on points and everyone was predicting a runaway lead in the league I HAD A DREAM. The last game, then on April 25th, was the deciding one for who got promoted to League 2, us or them. I laughed to myself at the time because of my mate deciding to get married on that day, and having to miss it. But now it's been moved to 26th I will be able to go. With Burton now only 6 points ahead, (yes, I know it's really 12, but we will beat them twice, so that makes only 6!) they must start to look over their shoulders at the approaching hoards of us, Cambridge, Histon and others. With their results not going quite to plan there has to be a realistic chance that one of us might catch them. Their next few games will show if they can take the pressure. I HAD A DREAM. Unfortunately I woke up before the final whistle, but at the time we were winning 2 - 1. (Exeter all over again?)

On the "I made a big mistake" thread I stated "As Dave R points out on another thread March sees a run of 7 eminently winnable games. We should expect to win these just as we did last night. It will not be easy but if we do then a run at the title and a season ending titanic battle with Burton is NOT out of the question".
Recent results and a quick glance at the fixture list shows that the possibility remains. We have to support the team to the max over the next few weeks everything is yet achieveable. It's going to be nail biting even when we are not playing! Lets keep the ball rolling with a win on Saturday..............IF we can get results in games where we would be favoured and snatch a result at Mansfield our "Carvery Day" when we play Kettering could be huge and that is followed by the first of the Burton games on the Monday....I can feel the tension rising already............

Pipping Burton is indeed a possibility though very unlikely with the points difference but we can all live in hope that the Burton "wobble" lasts for a good few games yet. Lets also remember that there are some good teams in the chasing pack below us Wrexham, Crawley, Kiderminster and Kettering etc who will be shooting at us for the rest of the season so its vitally important that we don't take our eye of the ball and ensure we galvanise our play off position .
