I was just sitting here and thinking about the last game of the season, don't worry I'm not wishing my life away, but it is worth thinking what sort of day it might be. This then got me thinking about the only time I ever felt a bit sorry for old uncle Mike, I will explain that shortly.
On the last day two things might happen, one we will see a full house as Burton bring the biggest away support in their history, as they want to celebrate on the final day what will be the clubs biggest ever day in history, promotion to the football league.
TUFC will need a win to get a guaranteed play- Off place and fans will becoming out of the woodwork, faster than Jim's elephant Pooh can hit the floor, it might even need to be an all ticket match.
Two, the Burton fans will out number the TUFC fans, as the team can't make the play-Offs, with nothing to play for and the thought of watching Burton celebrate promotion at Plainmoor, fans will stay away and it might just be only a few hundred TUFC fans at the match.
So back to feeling sorry for Bateson, now I will need some help here as I can't remember the year or the team we were playing in the last game of the season. I'm thinking about. I do hope I remember what happened, but If I have got anything wrong please correct me( I know Rob will ;D)
We had five or six games left to play and the team we were going to play on the last day of the season, had already won promotion. It looked like our team had nothing to play for as we were not winning games and no one felt we could reach the play-Offs.
So Bateson felt for TUFC the last game of the season would be a nothing game and would not attract many home fans and the other team were bring large numbers of fans to Plainmoor to celebrate promotion. Trying to maximize the gate income, Bateson sold of parts of the home stands to the away team.
Against all odds TUFC win all their next games and the final game could see them reach the play-Offs if they could win it. Now everyone wants to go to the game and cheer on TUFC, but wait half of it is sold out to away fans. Many TUFC fans were locked out of that game and some got really wound up as away fans with tickets to home stands, walked past them and into the ground.
Poor old uncle Mike sure got plenty of stick over that game, but to be fair, many of us might have done the same, as TUFC looked to be out of contention for a play-Off place.
