Correct - Elgin is not officially a city. The only "official" Scottish cities are Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and Stirling. More at www.siliconglen.com/Scotland/1_24.htmlAnd in England there are two places within striking distance of London with a confused status which extends to their football teams.... Does St Albans come within the definition of "confused" status?

Does St Albans come within the definition of "confused" status? No, St Albans is a proper city with a charter granted in 1877 according to my Whittaker's Almanack (much later than I would have thought). Cathedral on a hill? The City near the bottom of the Cherry Red Combined Counties Premier....

Guildford City.
Always thought of Guildford as a City, myself. But then it does have a Borough Council.

Guildford certainly has city aspirations having applied for status during the last two competitions. The old Guildford United club jumped the gun by changing its name to Guildford City in 1927 following the creation of the Diocese of Guildford prior to the building of the cathedral. Maybe it was wrongly assumed city status would follow automatically? The old club folded in the 1970s and its replacement has undergone a number of changes of identity to become Guildford City in 2006. Always unsure about suggesting Wiki but this link looks sound: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_status_(UK)

Certainly does seem thorough. And I note Chelmsford "not" City FC on there, too.
And as for Welwyn Garden City.....

Chelmsford City was the other one I had in mind. There's also Southwell City in the Central Midlands League.
As well as Swansea it was in Leicester and Stoke where the granting of city status resulted in a name change for the local professional club (this also happened in Lancaster and Cambridge).
Birmingham didn't add "City" until 1945 (with Chester and Salford following in belatedly renaming clubs).

Crickey Barton! Got any easier ones?
(Wasn't Chelmsford a Roman 'city' and, therefore, could cite an earlier precedent??)

Well done to those who got the answers to mine.
As for the "impossible" teaser, I have no idea!

Hah, the joy of google - this'll give a clue to someone -
It's happening, but not at Huish Park. It's at 2pm at Somerton Sports Club, Gassons Lane, Somerton, Somerset TA11 6HS.
******'s team will be similar to the one they fielded at Tiverton last Thursday.

It's at 2pm at Somerton Sports Club, Gassons Lane, Somerton, Somerset TA11 6HS. ******'s team will be similar to the one they fielded at Tiverton last Thursday. The game in question happened on Tuesday and was reported by the Western Morning News in a way that suggested the visiting club did not feel Somerton was a fit venue for a Football Combination game: poor surface, sloping pitch, rope around the pitch, no refreshments. Perhaps the whole affair says something of the current state of Yeovil Town FC. Anyway, not only has said player appeared in a full (football) international as recently as last month but, according to the WMN, he's also played in a UEFA Cup Final. But he'll have to content himself with Gassons Lane this week as he's not making the trip to Accra on Saturday....

Well it did cross my mind that there may be more than one player fitting the bill (as it's the second reserve game Yeovil have played at Somerton recently). But, yes, Doula is the player I was thinking about based on what's been in the local press this week.
