It has certainly been a very busy but ultimately successful year for the supporters trust, literally 12 months ago, we were holding a fans forum to discuss the poor running of the club, now we have raised over a quarter of a million pounds and hold a significant shareholding giving fans control of heritage rights that includes appointing two directors directly onto the TUFC board.
With the TUST AGM at the end of the month (28th and at last to be held at Plainmoor), comes as always, elections for half of the board and this will go live in the next few days with candidate statements to be distributed to members. However, with a more active involvement in the running of the club, interest is quite naturally high and consequently we have contested elections for the first time with seven candidates vying for five vacant positions. Ultimately, I think this is a good thing as it gives members more choice as to who represents them and of course, as the membership has trebled in the last year, it is now a very different electorate.
While I have been on the board for the last five years, it is not my year for re-election but my personal opinion is that the membership should look very carefully at those board members who are up for re-election this year as they have worked so incredibly hard with amazing results as part of a close knit team that is working so very well with Bryn and I would hate for them to be a victim of their own success.
So up for re-election are Nick Brodrick, our chair, who has done an amazing job during very trying circumstances, travels down from the other side of Taunton for all matches and has been working in addition to his TUST board and Torquay United Director responsibilities, on the Plainmoor ground improvements and absolutely essential that he is re-elected! Next is Robin Causley, he is one of the longest serving members of our board and is also co vice-chair. He has very strong and longstanding links in the community and is our grant application expert bringing in thousands of pounds for the club and is also a key member of the board. Rob Burkett is another due for election and is our social media expert working tirelessly in getting our message out there and to be honest we would be a bit stuffed without him there. 😂 Finally, Harry Lovering, another hard working volunteer with the travel club that many will know and is a co-oped board member, joined us this year but has brought in lots of new ideas particularly as to increasing youth engagement with the club and I would love to see him develop these going forward.
It was also Rick Williams year for re-election, but he will not be standing as he has previously filled the very important role of TUST secretary, and as the trust has expanded and increased its share of responsibilities, this is now deemed to be a standalone role and he will continue to attend board meetings and give his advice to the board. So three new candidates, at least one will get in, maybe all three and this should become clear in a few weeks.
