Very nearly a year ago since we first played Aveley, travelling up to their place to lose 2-1 with a late Ash goal giving a veneer of respectability to the score line if not the performance. Our return fixture at Plainmoor was notable in that it was the first match after we went into administration in February earlier this year, playing in front of an official 3600 crowd which looked very much in excess of 4000 as fans got behind the team. We got a draw that day with Ash also scoring again so a team he likes to play against and hope he starts tomorrow!
Aveley had a good maiden season in the National League South ending up on the same points as Bath and occupying the final playoff place but have started very poorly this time out with just a point against Tonbridge so far, although have had a relatively tough start with losses against, Slough, Eastbourne, Hempstead and Welling, all teams in the top half of the table with 3 in the playoffs including leaders Slough so a trip to Plainmoor has come at a bad time for them.
Looks like Dyer is the only player ruled out with injury for this game and as suspected is likely to be out for all of September as well. On a brighter note Craske is likely to come back after a good performance in the right wing back position last Saturday as he continues his quest for full fitness after a pre season niggle. Weather looks like it is holding up for this late August game so should be a good attendance particularly with the start we have had. No draws yet but all of our games have been tight with just a one goal margin. COYY!

On paper this should be an easy game - but as Brian Clough once said, the game isn't played on paper, it's played on grass.
Let's hope that Aveley don't suddenly find their form today and we get another win.
Whatever the score I predict another bumper crowd, a great atmosphere, continued positivity and maybe another pinch yourself moment.

So much for my prediction 🙄
I thought Paul Wotton’s post match interview was very honest. Decision making was definitely a problem.
Mussa has great feet and he can go past players but that’s no good if he doesn’t then pass the ball before he loses it.
In the team’s defence I’d say that it’s difficult for players at this level (compared to Man City for example) to break teams down that set up with 2 rows behind the ball. We did much better, and have done much better in previous games, when the play is more free flowing. And after all, the team’s a work in progress.
At the end of the day, it could have been another Saturday without football at Plainmoor and we didn’t lose.
Oh yes, and supporters have now pledged over £136,000 for the club in the community share issue!

I thought Paul’s comments were absolutely spot on. 2 points dropped but young team and still gelling so cannot expect a linear upward trajectory. Poor free kick to give away as it was in an ideal position for them and they had limited opportunity otherwise to score. Was frustrated that with Seymour and Ash on the pitch in the latter stages by the number of aerial crosses into the box. Not a mistake that an experienced Moxey made on Monday. A win on Tuesday will still account for a good return.

A win on Tuesday will still account for a good return. Still very early days for this young but hungry and committed group and predict Paul Wotton will be wanting to add to his squad, very likely from our neighbors down the road. Another of Adam Randell's ability level would be ideal to pep up the forward line - need more threat and more goals in he last third - this was always going to be the most difficult area for the new manager to bring in genuine pace/ quality. As per usual a pretty good start raises expectations and the players will have to learn to cope with that. As always I remain a realist and tend to look more at overall performances than actual results none of which have been totally convincing with much room for improvement particularly in forward areas. Consistency, both individually and as a squad/team will always be key to how our season progresses. A packed early fixture list was always going to be a massive test for a completely new group of players but they have generally handled it well though early season knocks and fatigue are sure to have played a part in recent performances. Wotton does it right though doesn't he? Any sign of a knock injury or not being quite at it he makes a change unlike the previous chap who pushed them on and always seemed to ended up with a huge long term injury list. Sort out the front line get them playing with more threat and effectiveness and the goals will come and the defence, which is pretty solid, will concede less. We're not far off at all which is pretty incredible when you look back just a few month. I very much doubt the good signs, including the incredible general resurrection of public interest, big crowds and the share issue success will have gone un noticed and just maybe one or two additions could just make a difference between top spot and also rans.
