The club has thanked Aaron Downes for his efforts, both during Johnson's tenure and particularly following the latter's departure, and rightly so. However, if anyone should be thanked first and foremost for keeping us in the NLS, it would surely be Asa Hall, who was asked to slot into an unfamiliar position for the last ten games or so, and undeniably steadied a previously porous defence.
When Paul Wotton gets around to choosing an assistant for next season, then Asa will surely be considered for that role, with the proviso that he will continue to be registered as a player and make the odd appearance as long as his legs will last. Our other veteran, Dean Moxey, must be worth one more season as well, provided he has younger players around him to do the legwork.
I doubt that Wotton will be interested in keeping many of last season's players, in fact in my opinion the list will be very short, consisting perhaps of Lapslie, McGavin, Archer, Booth and perhaps Jarvis, who will need to take some persuading.

Wotton would be an obvious candidate. Lives locally, knows the area and knows the league. Twenty years as a player, five as coach or assistant at Argyle and five successful years managing Truro. I am very pleased with this. I had every confidence that the recruitment process would be fast and thorough. Great to have Warnock’s input obviously. Some would say he is an easy option but I strongly disagree. Given the historic debt inherited, we could do without having to fork out compensation. There are plenty of decent alternatives available for free. But the consortium has identified the man most likely to bring success and not balked at paying to get the right man rather than save a wedge of money and settle for second best. Does not worry me one bit that he has not managed above National League South level. It is more important where he wants to go than what he has done in the past. I do not want an ex Football League manager who lives off past glories, thinks the world owes him a living and whinges if he cannot have everything he would want if money were no object. I want someone who is realistic, hard working, driven, focussed and ambitious. Wotton had a long playing career at Football League level and has been an assistant manager at Football League level. He has served his apprenticeship in five successful years at Truro, but realistically has taken them as far as they can go. I feel he will work his socks off to become a Football League manager. That is a realistic goal at Torquay - let’s hope he can make it happen. I will not shout or complain if he moves on from us to a bigger club - as that will mean he has been a success. If his ambition is to go even further in the game than we can achieve at Torquay then good luck to him. I get the feeling that he is the kind of manager who would be a nightmare for any player hoping to swing the lead and pick up an easy wage, but a dream manager for any player desperate to achieve success and desperate to realise their full potential. The last two years have been a nightmare. I am optimistic about next season. Even when we lose, I hope we can say we really gave it a go. I would echo what has been said about Aaron Downes. As a leader in a crisis, he did a fantastic job in looking after his players through a very difficult time for them - young men worried about paying the rent or the mortgage.
He is a good, decent and honest guy.
So pleased that he was able to lead us to safety. He can leave with his head held high and will always be welcome at Plainmoor.
But he is inextricably linked to two years of abject failure under Gary Johnson, so unfortunately I don’t think it was ever in doubt that there would be no role for him in a complete reset and a fresh start.

How fitting that the manager announcement came at the Livermead Cliff Hotel.
The scene of the TUST fans’ forum just over six months ago.
For me and many others, the ridiculous posting on the club’s official website within minutes of the meeting ending marked the point when the way the club was run went from unpleasant and irritating to utterly unacceptable.
It could not go on like that.
We need to ensure that we can never go back to such dark days.

This isn't a criticism of the new owners who have much better things to do with their valuable time, but the contacts page needs updating ( torquayunited.com/contact-us/) before Pete's question can be accurately answered.  |

No coincidence that the press conference was held at Livermead Cliff, still waiting for the keys to Plainmoor and TUST were able to recommend a suitable venue. Expect shed loads of updating come the end of the month! |

As Rob says, the administrators are running the club until the end of the month and I would not expect them to comment on such issues. As soon as control passes to the consortium, I am sure all will be revealed. The strange situation of the consortium, not “the club”, revealing the new manager was due to an overwhelming business case for clarifying the management position in order to kickstart player recruitment. The club would not be worth saving if it went into June with no manager and no players lined up. That would mean creditors not paid, administrators not paid and no jobs saved. So this had to be treated as a special case for the administration process to be a success. You can see how quickly and efficiently the process was executed and communicated, so I would expect all other issues to be handled similarly. There is a huge amount of work being done, but communication will only really hit top gear on formal transfer of ownership. |
