Good article from the excellent Torquay Talk : torquaytalk.com/2024/03/19/tt-blog-talking-tactics-by-mark-hirst/Obvious to everybody but Downes that we are just inviting the opposition to walk through us. Good point made about how the back three spreads, so we end up with two full backs and just the one centre back in Tomlinson. I know many have lost patience with Tomlinson, but our formation really is throwing him to the lions expecting miracles from him. No wonder he fails - he has been set up to fail. That shape back three might work if you had say a fully fit Asa Hall playing as midfield anchor. He could drop back and make a second centre back alongside Tomlinson if Marshall / Booth and Moxey are playing slightly wide. But we have got McGavin as our deepest midfielder. He hasn’t got the nous or the energy to drop back. Strolling past McGavin and Tomlinson is hardly like breaking through a formidable barrier, is it? Missing a centre back may be suicidal, but what use do we make of the extra man it gives us? Not a lot. Stobbs is stuck in no man’s land not defending but not having the freedom to really get forward. Jude-Boyd is excellent but limited in what he can do on the wrong side. We are leaking goals and not creating that much at the other end. Crying out for a tactical shake-up. Aaron Downes is not the man to do it.

I’m glad Downes got another set of eyes to assist him in Robbie Herrera, as that is obviously something he prefers to have. Asa coming back in to the starting X1 and the tactics and energy adopted on Saturday really paid off. The first half we chased everything. ‘Swarmed them’ as Asa put it. Second half was the best resilience I have seen in a while, against a side who were in some very good form themselves. A well earned clean sheet and three points. I hope we get a few more performances like that between now and the final day. Makes us a different prospect altogether.

Herrera could very well be the small difference between our defensive frailty over recent games and the clean sheet we got this weekend, or it could be a complete coincidence. Time will tell. One one hand its a shame that Asa Hall is about the best centre back that we have at the club, on the other his effectiveness there is a boon for us and also for him. He could play another season in the back three/four whereas his time in midfield is over, in my humble opinion. I will undoubtedly be proved wrong!

Its a surprise that he has never been given a run of games there over the years. It would be a real eye opener if he could see out the last seven games at centre back for us. A few more twists to come yet though.... and as we all know it can change from Downsey to Clownsey very quickly !
