Surely the point that Jon is making is that Southend do not deserve to be where they are because if the National League were to apply their own rules they would be penalised by having points deducted or by being relegated. I'm not totally clear on this but I believe as for the National League applying their own rules relegation or points deductions are not enforced until a club actually goes into administration. When Exeter City were unable to pay their wages and debts and went to the PFA for a loan and concluded a CVA whereby their creditors only saw a fraction of the money they were owed I don't believe they faced any sanctions from the Football Conference (as it was then known). I also seem to remember at the time a lot of other Conference clubs fans were far from impressed. |

Thanks plainmorepete..I support your idea of salary caps...despite the fact they have proven difficult to regulate and enforce. My problem with the Premier League is that the revenue gained benefits foreign owners, foreign players and foreign owned media outlets ...none of which benefits the English game. Most of our Premier league teams are English in name only. From this perspective, the health of lower league clubs...like Torquay..is probably a better barometer of the state of English football rather than Man City winning the European Cup. Completely agree with you on this. There is another aspect of the Premier Leagues endless march toward global domination that never gets mentioned. In Nigeria football fans spend their money on watching Premier League games shown in tin shack bars instead of spending it on attending their own local games. One of the reasons African nations have struggled on the world stage is the lack of a home grown infrastructure that invests in the local game which is not helped by money being sucked out of their local economies by the lure of the Premier League. FIFA should ban domestic leagues from promoting themselves abroad. We all know Africa has the capabilities of producing world class players but as long as FIFA allows rich markets to exploit poorer ones Africa will never be able to challenge the dominance of Europe and South America.I This isn't the game I fell in love with over 50 years ago. It has sold its soul to TV money and although it might look all slick and glistening on the outside it is rotting away on the inside. |

Plainmoorpete, that’s an interesting point that you make about football in Africa and the Premier League.
As Stig123 points out, the Premier League has now become a world league played on English soil with predominantly foreign players, managers, owners and sponsors. In this context the National League is actually the fourth tier of English football, equivalent to the old fourth division (with NLS being the fifth tier ☹️).
The problem for clubs like ours and the lower tiers is that the TV money doesn’t filter down this far which is to the detriment of the English game.
Hopefully the implementation of the Fan Led Review recommendations will address some of these problems.

Picking up on the latest TUST news in another thread: But that’s not the full picture as [Southend] have to re-appear in court on August 23 to face a winding up petition from HMRC, needing to pay a £275,000 tax bill. The story may have a happy ending for Southend’s loyal supporters as on Wednesday the National League issued a statement confirming that as the club had now paid its football creditors they would issue a license for them to play their fixtures, although there are conditions attached. Should the club not pay its £275,000 tax bill to HMRC they will be docked 10 points or should the situation worsen then being expelled from the league is likely. Just a quick point about the Southend saga. Southend have a current deadline of August 23 to pay the HMRC bill. On Aug 23rd the judge may extend that deadline to give Ron Martin more time to raid his bank accounts. What the National League is saying is that they will not. If Southend Utd haven't paid £275k to HMRC on Aug 23rd they will get a 10 point deduction, even if the court is happy to let Southend have another (eg) month to pay HMRC. |

They will dock them points but not kick them out. Exactly. The NL have passed that point now that the fixtures are confirmed and the season is about to start. The deadline for excluding Southend from the National League (and a possible reprieve for us) would have been the NL AGM back in June. |
