Before Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham in November 2020 (when the fans of the fan owned club sold it) the National League was a fairly level playing field with playing budgets largely based on attendances. It was English (and Welsh) football with English owners, English sponsors, English managers and predominantly English players.
When the 2 millionaires bought Wrexham that changed and the spectre of an unbalanced league with a few very wealthy clubs (in the Premier League often owned by countries) had arrived in the 5th tier. Clubs now had a choice, they could either try to live within their means and struggle to compete or gamble on throwing money at an attempt to get promoted.
Watching the razzmatazz and publicity surrounding the Welsh club’s promotion to the EFL anyone would think that it was a footballing miracle akin to Leicester winning the Premier League or little Sutton getting promoted. But this was a promotion bought with foreign dollars with eye watering salaries paid to players brought in from league one and two clubs - and now they even have a recent ex England keeper! (Of course, they also have Luke Young but he was always a good player that was going to do well and good luck to him.)
Paul Mullin won the 2020-21 League Two golden boot, in the process helping Cambridge win promotion. So he could be a League One or arguably even a Championship player now but he’s been here being paid well enough to compensate him for this lack of status. Isn’t this a 6th former playing with the year 7s!
So our last game of the season is against what is to all intents and purposes a League One team and barring a miracle we will be relegated to regional football. I hope our Gulls do National League football proud and show the American owners the true spirit of English football. Let’s sing our hearts out however the game is going.
Come on you yelloooooows!!
