Well, we can look Argyle fans in the face tomorrow as we at least managed to score a goal (even the first one) against Notlob (no that isn't a palindrome) Bolton when we let in four in the final!
In fact Argyle now take over the dubious honour from us (and a few others) of being at the wrong end of the biggest winning margin.

The word “Trophy” always sends a cold shiver down my spine, so what the f**k is the Papa-Jon Trophy? Is it similar to the one we covet so much and you get £60 if you win?

Oh dear, I thought someone would have known the answer to my question, but never mind, although I am busy concreting at the moment (weather permitting of course) I will track down the answer for you…because that is what normal, helpful and friendly people do! 🙂

Papa John Trophy is the same competition we played Bolton Wanderers in many years ago then called the Sherpa Van Trophy as per the thread title. Do buck up Poo or you will need to redo your cementing! 😉

Do buck up Poo or you will need to redo your cementing! 😉 Thank-you for that. 🙂 I did have a look at the prize money for winning this competition, and even that amount wouldn’t be enough for us to squander (as we did) our only chance of getting back in the league. While I have your attention though, there is another competition that goes on above us which involves league teams playing against premiership reserves…again…what the f**k is that all about?

It is this Trophy the EFL Papa John's Trophy that the Premiership Academy Teams with the top category play in (basically Under 23 teams). It is the 41st season of the competition. For years it was restricted to League 1 and 2 teams (or the bottom two tiers the names have changed a few times) like it was when we had that marvellous semi-final win against Wolves then lost to Bolton in the final.
Basically entry qualification has been extended. It is still L1 and L2 plus 16 of the Premiership Academy teams.
What is that all about? Indeed good question baffles me too! Concrete set yet? ⚽️

Originally known as the Associate Members Cup, created by the Football League to give the then Associate members (3rd and 4th Division clubs with restricted voting rights) the chance of a Wembley appearance. The creation of the FA Premier League led to abolition of the distinction between Full and Associate members in the rump Football League with all members being granted full voting rights. As a result this competition was renamed the Football League Trophy.

Can it be that it was all so simple then… Before the days when the Premier League, TV money and sponsorship ruined the game it was.

BTW a word to Stefano. Thanks for ruining the cherished belief that Torquay United were the first Devon side to play at Wembley in your contributions to this subject over on BTPIR, although I do bow to your superior knowledge.

Unfortunately it is not something that can be dressed up. Torquay United was not the first Devon side to play at Wembley. Upsetting as it was for you plainmoorpete there is no other way to put it! 😉⚽️

Well…I’m in suspenders here…it’s a long story! 😚
Us Mortals, who have dared to upset Merse by not agreeing with him, are unable to enter Paradise (or as it’s better known, The Magic Roundabout…boing!) so which team was the first?

Devonport Dockyard Apprentices who played at Wembley in 1974 in the final of the National Association of Boys Clubs Cup (an under 21 competition), and then followed it up with another Wembley appearance in the same competition a year later 1975. I know they won the 2nd game but cannot remember or find out how they got on in the first game (which I believe was against Sheffield). ⚽️
