well, heres my two pennies worth on this...
I know of the group of lads who sing this song, and while I don't stand directly next to them I am within earshot of the chants/ stupid (literally) and as onthebeat says pure witless remarks made by the group.
The Thing is, the society we live in today (did I really just say that? crikey I'm getting old!) they, unfortunately really don't see any difference between the C word and the F word! its funny when they say it in the playground and its funny when they sing it n the popside
I am a little younger than some of you on here (sorry ) so maybe I can look past the swearing easier than others, as it has always been a part of my football life. yes I remember the C word in question being used by people much older than myself when i first started going to the plainmoor at the tender age 13!
I do swear at the game, at the ref, at the opposition, at the away fans, and at that cheating b*****d that dived for the penalty. I do not join in with that chant because of my own principles.
My point is though this whole topic is based on opinion. Many on here are offended or do not want to hear that word while watching a game of football, but we cant seriously expect stewards to take action against one word that some find offensive and not others. my language may offend people when I'm at the game! Many will not want to hear the F word, and then some don't want to here the B word, where do you draw the line? As a club, officially, we need to either eradicate it all or let it slide. and I feel Football at our level has gone too far down the road to eradicate it all.
I was watching Everton v Man Utd at Goodison earlier this season and the language used their by the evertonians you would not believe, it would make our very own clan of idiots blush, I watched this one old lady spend the best part of a minute to stand up only to hurl an alphabet of swearwords at Christiano Ronaldo, now that really was an atmosphere even I did not feel comfortable in and it did feel good to be back on the pop side!
I do not think the stewards interfering more than they do is the answer, they have a hard enough job with that particular group as it is, everytime any of them come within ear shot of that area a we hate Argyle chant develops. the kids are pushing boundaries with the stewards and seeing how far they can go, little chats with the ring leaders will just make them worse. the bottom line is they don't respect them, and until one/all them gets ejected from the ground (which I don't particularly want to see) I don't think they will.
I will say this however, It is easy to disregarded this group as trouble makers, and while they are by no means my favorite people at plainmoor, I do feel for them sometimes. They are young and dare I say they don't know any different. I can physically see on their faces looking for the approval of others on the pop, and the trouble is that there are a few 'special adults' (thats the nice way of saying retarded) that have taken the group in and are feeding their behavior.
If my language at a game was offending anybody I would like to know about it and if it offends you i suggest you tell them that yourself, not via the forum but face to face. while as a group they may laugh at you personally when enough people tell them this every time they sing the song they will soon get the message
The popside used to be full of wit. the best comedy in the world was found on the terraces of a football game not the mindless drivel that these kids are coming out with! but nobody is saying anything and they don't see it as wrong or unfunny. If I had said half the dumb-witted remarks that these kids are saying when I first stared watching Torquay I would of been slaughtered by the old pros of the popside. I remember one of my very first games at Torquay wearing my brand new Man Utd shirt! how pleased I was walking up to the game watching a proper Football match in proper Football shirt. I got slaughtered for the whole 90 mins but you know what, I never did it again!

Quote:While there are some things in his vision plans that really would be good for the Bay, so many will ruin it even more. The tower blocks he wants on the harbour, will not help the locals get a home, they would mostly be just second homes, or holiday homes, you would need to have money to buy one. Just how does blocks like that help the local economy? 92nd seems to think it will make the Bay look like Monti Carlo, well all that will happen is all the ground will be lost around the harbour. Far better to really get decent outdoor cafes. like all the ones I saw in Holland, so the land has so much better use for tourists etc.
Tower blocks is such a connotatively poor word, it suggests images of council estates in London and of Nelson Mandela House, thats not whats featured in the Mayoral Vision. Plus I didn't suggest them directly around the harbour, I said they'd look good on the two hills namely at the top of Rock Walk and alongside the existing apartments up around Meadfoot. Of course they'd have to be architecturally viable, I'd personally suggest a Mediterrean theme to further the Riviera idea, no horrid concrete blocks but regardless it'd change the whole view of that area. Even so you could easily have them around the harbour and have the lower floors consisting of open air cafes to gain the continental cafe feel, which personally I think is one of the things Torquay is doing well alongside the harbour, well the Pavilion side anyways, not the grubby side by Living Coasts.
True they'd probably be sold to out of towners but those out of towners are still going to keep flooding into the town, Torquay last year was one of the most popular places in the country to move to, the Bay's population is estimated to swell to 150,000 by the end of 2010's. So it's evident we need to build more housing and I'd rather go high density around the harbour than continue the march to Newton Abbott. Hell by the time the gas works development is complete, there will be no gap at all between Torquay and Paignton and if we continue to sprawl the Willows out, by 2020-25 we'll be left with a Torquay-Paignton-Kingsteington-Newton Abbot city.
But perhaps I'm a bit too much of a progressive, personally speaking I'd axe Torre Abbey Meadow and use that for entertainment complexes, bars and restaurants and the like, I consider that scrubby little field one of the biggest wastes of land in the town, but I can see many people objecting vehemently to it, for silly reasons like walking dogs or what not, even though theres a massive beach out front and numerous fields across Torquay for that sort of thing.
Anyways back onto the Mayor thing, the issue with it is, we've adopted this idea directly from American cities but they have much more autonomy than British cities. Regenerating American cities is much simpler than British cities as they have much greater power over taxes and the like, if Torquay was an American city, when the bypass is built, we could enact tax breaks for IT companies and other non location dependent companies, making it much cheaper for them to base themselves in Torquay than the rest of the country, promote IT courses at South Devon College/Uni/whatever it'll be in the future and within a decade have a vibrant IT community, finally ridding Torquay of it's reliance on the dying tourist industry. Being a British city we can't do this and thats the crux of the issue, it's all well and good having an elected mayor but when his powers are so limited theres nothing he can really do, about the only elected mayor in the country with the powers to make a difference is the London Mayor.
Speaking of which, whats Ken Livingstone up to these days we should invite him down to stand in the next election, getting such a high profile mayor would attract investment like nobody's business jk
