TUFC match preview After a much needed away win against Southend now 10 days ago our team look to retain the momentum but have a tough match against Solihull Moors who are right up there and it will be difficult to notch up our first home win. Players seem to be coming back from injury now so may be a slightly different side that started against Woking. Anyway, looking forward to this after getting through a shed load of work in the last few weeks and a chance to see the game with my son before he goes back to uni at the end of the month.

Solihull are actually very good at playing football, so don’t think they will set out to spoil the game.
I hope that means we get the opportunity to play some good stuff in an open and entertaining match.
On the other hand, it might just mean that we get thrashed.

We have to give this team time to gell this season of all seasons imo. Lots of new faces with questionable talent some might say but lets all show some patience and i would like to think mid table could be very doable. Just how long do we wait? All the warning signs are of a club in a relegation crisis and its still very early in the season. This squad and first choice team will never gel. Something has to change pretty quick before the real relegation rot truly sets in. We have the best manager in the division and even he has lost his magic touch. The signs were there from day one of the season and we are still persisting withthe same set of players who are simply not up to standard. Something has to give soon |

Fair to say that we were well beaten by a good Solihull Moors side tonight but thought there were some bright spots and that we played better than during our last home game against Woking. In fact if the referee had applied the correct interpretation of a two footed challenge with studs up by their keeper on Evans then it could have been a very different result.
Solihull started well but it was Torquay that took a surprise lead with Andrews nicking the ball off the toes of their defender and squaring the ball for Goodwin who just had enough time and space to squeeze off a shot into the bottom right hand corner. With then needed a period of consolidation but let them back into it when one of their players counter-attacked from deep and was able to get past Goodwin to pass into our area for Dallas to get through our defence and round Lovett to easily score. They were back in the game and for the next 20 to 30 minutes were clearly the better side with a disallowed goal (not sure why) and a turned down penalty appeal before a ball wasn’t dealt on the edge of the area giving their player just enough time and space to fire home at the far post.
Not that Torquay heads dropped and we started to create a few chances in the run-up to half-time with the best of them being a good flowing move that ended with Goodwin not getting enough power on a left-footed shot with their keeper saving well.
As always, whoever scored the first goal in the second half would prove to be crucial and Wyatt just nicked their player on the edge of the area (May have got the ball) for the referee to emphatically point at the spot. He then seemed to lose a little bit of control with Lovett and Wyatt getting yellow cards either side of the penalty for complaining which was well taken and then at the other end Andrews seemed to be very harshly penalised in their area, bouncing the ball in frustration and then earning an even harsher yellow for doing this. Certainly turned the crowd against the referee with whom we got no more marginal decisions and later on in the match as we strived to get back into things, Evans was involved in two penalty shoot outs, the first after doing fantastically well to get pass two defenders only to be pushed over as he entered the area with the ref given a foul just outside. A bit of argy-bargy with Hanson going down clutching his face in the resultant free kick with the ref giving both him and a Solihull Moors player yellow for their troubles. Then secondly, Evans was able to dispossess their keeper who lunged in with both feet to take out both the ball and Evans but with only a corner to show for his troubles.
We still attacked but started to leave space at the back for Solihull to exploit and in injury time the ball fell unexpectedly to Martin in the area who just hesitated for the fraction of a second only to be dispossessed and another goal hit in from close range. Bit harsh on him as I thought he played very well coming on in the second half with Evans my man of the match today.

Wearing very thin I'm afraid. Starting well, but then...Showed good glimpses in places Thought Solihull were the best side I've seen warm up. None of this just kicking the ball past the keeper bollocks. One of the best passing sides seen at Plainmoor for a long while (not helped by backing of against their number 11). He was bought on, straight after we scored. Experienced players required, but can we afford them? Lets hope there are four worse teams in the league this year... |

Solihull Moors…has a bit of a ring to it don’t you think? Not quite as much as Dorking Wanderers I’ll admit, but still up there!

We were done for pace time and time again, either through the middle or out wide. Our so-called defensive strengths were exposed by a slicker, quicker moving team who transitioned from defence to attack at a speed we just couldn't cope with. Solihull have an excellent forward line who know how to finish , supported by a midfield who pass and move with real purpose.
They were far superior to us on the night and the score-line doesn't flatter them. Yes, we should have had a penalty and theirs was soft but lets not kid ourselves-we were completely outplayed and we have problems that urgently need addressing in every part of our team.

In the Blue corner we have Mike Tyson…in the Red corner we have any TUFC supporter. The reason the corner is Red is because it’s covered in our blood!🩸 You don’t step into the ring every weekend (and the occasional Tuesday) with Mike Bloody Tyson and not expect a good beating. So if you have to step into the ring (play a game of football) and you know you will get a battering, you have to do something about it! In the case of Mike Tyson you might want to shove a Kalashnikov down your shorts, and should Mike notice the bulge you can always say you’re just happy to see him!

How many people eat their Kellogg's Cornflakes in the morning, knowing that there is more goodness in the packaging than there is in the Cornflakes themselves…yet still they continue to eat them! That’s what happens when you don’t think outside the box…not the box the Cornflakes came in I hasten to add.
So at last we come to the crux of the matter…4-4-2! It’s not working, and everyone on this site (well maybe not everyone) can see that. How many times have I read reports that we play hoof ball and are totally bypassing our midfield…I have lost count. If you want to hoof it fine, but push one midfielder back and one forward if their not going to be used in their correct roles! Play any formation 0-0-10 if you want…we’re going to lose anyway so at least make it entertaining!
Mrs Pew is looking at me shaking her head, knowing full well (as I do) that most people on this site will look at these posts with glazed eyes and think what an idiot, and next game will say “oh how wonderful, we’re playing 4-4-2 again, now if we move Colonel Sha&-Rat to that position, and move Major Fortescue-Smythe to that position?” It’s all a load of bollocks! 🙄
On saying that though, it does give me a laugh on a Saturday. 🙂

Solhull man for men had better players than us throughout the team AND they look like a team well drilled and used to playing together. They may find that Wrexham, Notts County and Chesterfield out-resource them, but they are far better than any other team I have seen at Plainmoor this season and I think they will finish in the top four. I felt they almost had another gear to go to if they needed. On the plus side we created far more than we have done in a series of toothless home displays this season. We played 4-4-2 from the start. Moxey orthodox left back with Wyatt infront of him. Evans wide on the right with Hanson and McGavin as the central two. Amazing how many are still banging on that we played with wing-backs when we clearly did not! At least the excellent Dom Roman on TorquayTalk called it right. torquaytalk.com/2022/09/14/tt-match-verdict-tufc-1-4-solihull-moors-by-dom-roman/Evans, who has been thoroughly underwhelming until now, had an excellent game. Certainly earned one penalty, possibly two - neither given. The "possible" one came after he rode a series of robust challenges on the right wing to get to the edge of the box before being wrestled down. Fell inside the box, first contact possibly just outside. The second, after being switched from wide right to "in the hole", was as clear-cut as you will see. Arguably a red card for recklessly dangerous play. 2-3 against ten men with an outfielder in goal (3 subs used) may have led to a very interesting end to the game. But to be fair, the gulf in quality felt more like a 1-4 than a 3-3. Goodwin was also excellent and showed signs of a partnership with Andrews. Two goals have boosted his confidence to go along with his hard work. With the attack looking a bit livelier, the problems were midfield and defence. McGavin and Hanson were dreadful. No shield at all to the back four. Perm any two from Hall, Lapslie and Donnellan and leave them both out. Not best use of Moxey playing him at orthodox left back. Play him at left centre-back! That means no room for Omar, but tough. Wyatt would surely be better at left back than playing as the least adventurous left midfielder in the history of the game. I still feel Crowe is not good enough either as a wing-back or a full-back. Moxey off at half-time injured. I hoped Wyatt would drop back and Martin play ahead of him, but Martin just replaced Moxey at left back. This made a few people realise we weren't playing three at the back and claimed it was a formation change. It wasn't! The ineffectual McGavin was then taken off and replaced by Jarvis. Wyatt moved into centre midfield alongside Hanson. Evans moved from the right wing into "the hole" and Andrews (right) and Goodwin (left) played either side of Jarvis. Iseguan was then a straight swap for Andrews on the right of the attack. Of course, I am very disappointed that we were out-played and lost heavily, but I have certainly seen us play far worse this season. We looked like making things happen and scoring - which we have not done up until now. I never really thought we would be in the mix with the big four - although the size of the quality gap up to them is alarming. Need to start winning a few against the poorer teams so we can stop looking over our shoulder at the bottom four - or worse still looking up the table at three of them. As for keeping in touch with seventh place, we have probably already giving ourselves too much to do - just as we did last year. Disappointing indeed. Would rather have a boring mid-table season than a relegation scrap though! |
